Should I get a GP32 in 2023, and what programs do you recommend for me to try on it?

Hey guys so anyways I am just thinking about buying a GP32 system on eBay but here’s the thing what are the recommended programs that I should download? And how do I convert videos for the thing?

The answer is no.
If you are a collector or a tech masochist willing to spend a major chunk of time into exploring it, then yes, go for it.
But for any sane person who just wants to spend time gaming, there are a bunch of consoles out there to explore.
But if you still want, check out the repo https://openhandhelds.org/ to see what this thing can actually play.

Ya know what, I’m a collector of obscure items like the GP32 and I would like to own it in my collection, but here’s the thing how do I use gpcinema (I hope someone knows what I’m talking about) in 2023? Like say convert videos to Xvid/Divx? Because I’m used to the gba scene and knowing on encoding vids to the gba, but how do i encode the videos to the gp32 via virtualdub?

Well using old Homebrewhandheld might get that popolular as using Old Gameboy, so i would assume this makes sense, .. and if this thing still works, why not?
Good thing on Gp32 is that it dosnt have a Build In Batteriepack, so you only need a few AA and you are ready.. , but it might be a bit dificult to source its special Cards as they where some photo memory cards back then.., its not SD..
EvilDragon got a big Gp32 Repo, which should still be online..

ah cool, can you give me a link to that GP32 Repo?

I'd say go or it. I bought one (GP32) a few months ago. The official/physical games are neigh impossible to find for good prices, but luckily it is easy to dump the game files. Highest SmartMedia Card it supports is 128MB, which doesn't fit the entire library, but enough to rotate out the ones you don't like.

I say go for it too. Set it up that way you like and keep it that way. There will probably never be upgrades so it will never be obsolete. Be retro. Be stable. Spend more time gaming.

And throw your Xbox out the window.

I'm fine with just buying a blank 128MB SMC and loading other games on it. I hear updating the firmware to other launchers has a more probable chance of corrupting the flash memory chip. Is that true?

Thanks for the response dude, maybe I will try to buy it in late September/early October also how do I program on it?

Wow, it's been two years since I ( i used to be xboxfreak btw) posted this and I just found a gp32 blu unit and I could maybe use this as a EDC device for the giggles, but here's the thing, what systems can this run?

If you mean which other system can it emulate: don't expect too much. It can do some older platforms like NES, MegaDrive, Gameboy and maybe some SNES and GameBoy Color games.
You can overclock the CPU and see if 133MHz improves the performance a bit. Some homebrew ports like Doom and Quake might be nice to show to.

Over the years it became harder to purchase the SMC but on Ebay there appear to be new cards available. Some SD-to-SMC adapter might also work but apparently still limits you to 128MB.

I think it used to be free but I don't know where to get it these days. I think I used Virtualdub in the past to convert videos to divx format.
I think there is some GP32 software bundle on the internet archive but I've not tried that myself, maybe it has it.

Alright, I just bought one today. YAY!, but anyways. I have a quick question and sorry if i disturb you guys. Can you send me the config for the Divx Conversion + how do i transfer vids that are encoded for moviepark to be played on the gp32? thanks and have a great day =)
PS: does moviepark come on the EU BIOS? thanks =)

Virtualdub: https://www.virtualdub.org/
DivX: http://www.oldversion.com/windows/divx-4-12

Settings
Resize video to 320x240 (GP32 native resolution) or 320x180 (for widescreen videos).
Convert the audio to MP3 at 32-40kbps, 22,050 Hz.
Use video codec to DivX 4.12 and set the bitrate to 160kbps (or 128kbps), and use two-pass encoding.
If the video is 30/60fps you could reduce it to 15 or 24fps to save some space.

alrighty, thanks for the settings. but sorry if i sound like a noob, here is the thing. when i try to convert a DVD movie to the format the gp32 accepts, its 1.1 gigs for a full length film. how do i compress it to where i can fit it on a 256 or a 512 smc card?

Did you check if the resulting video indeed is matching your requested settings? (In Windows right click the video, check properties->details: 320x240, 22Hz, 128kbps, <24fps, DivX codec)
If they don't match, check VirtualDub to see if you selected DivX as codec.
I think the maximum SMC size used by GP32 is 128MB if I remember correctly.
