Should Emulators Be Playable?

Some people on this forum believe that emulators are interesting as a technical exercise. I personally believe that it is not worth doing an emulator unless you have a playable result. What do you think?

Personally I think that emulators coded as a technical exercise are just as interesting as "playable" ones. I hope we get more "silly" emulators ;)

whatever floats the authors boat i suppose, i wouldn't mind developing a unplayable emulator if i learnt something from it.

if it werent worth doing for the experience , we wouldnt have much
think about it
people said GBA was imposable on gp32
well, someone went for the experience because the general ruling was imposable, so he ouldnt have been doing it to go playable, he was doing it for experience
walla!
here we have a nice ass emu when you think about the clock speeds
ok, quake is the same way, its playable
everything anyone codes, they learn, thats always a good worst case senario

Well, actually you did the same thing with your CPS thing (no, I DON'T want to roll up that old discussion again).
Nobody believed you because it never existed... but it doesn't mean you never started coding it. People only believe what they see.

I'm no coder, but I can imagine it can be quite a bit of fun starting to port or code an emu which you know will never be playable.

Usually, the coders keep quiet about these projects, because they know this only leads to negative answers in the community...

i dont think an emulator has to be playable at all
a psx emu that could run through the intro and bios would be elite considering as octavious said it has been said it cannot be done
i mean remember the first release of zardoz jone's genmu and how slow it was.it was really choppy, virtually unplayable with no sound and everyone said that genisis emulation couldn't be done but a year down the line and we have a fully playable emu with limited sound although it even looks as if this will be resolved soon enough.basicly people should have more faith and respect because coders spend hours tweaking bits here and there, late into the night to smooth things out.lets just wait a while and see what news the next few weeks bring :D

I never read that the author was doing this for your benefit, or even that he plans on releasing it. Just because you won't benefit personally doesn't mean it is a pointless exercise.

You know what I hate?

When people like you try to discourage developers. This guy is doing the FPSE port for fun, probably to learn something about the gp32 and the emulator.

And stop making fucking threads about it. (Directly or indirectly). We hate you.

Note: I don't actually represent everyone at gp32x

im with RatchetMan on this one.
But from the developers point of view, I can totally understand that they want to push the borders for themself, and most of the gp32 users.

Even tho it would never be playable, it will STILL be a ps emulator.
And if they want to use their time doing just that, its fine by me.

Im just glad someone does experimenting at all, and that people develop for the gp32.

All respect to the coders. As a php coder myself, I started looking into porting for the gp32, but fuck its not as easy as I would thought.

Dunno why some people get so angry over rachetman's post.
Its his opinion, and as far as I see it, he just opened this thread for discussion on your view. Not a thread for you to tell him that you hate him :p

If you are paying for it yes, but if not why is a devloper even obliged to keep going,he is coding to learn, to see how far he can take it. Getting new emulators is only a by product of the process.

i'm gonna download some source code for an Atari 2600 emulator. I want to play some good ol' Atari 2600 and from what i hear its pretty crappy for the GP32. Oh well, i guess if i want something i'm gonna have to try to do it myself :p I doubt i'll be able to figure anything out but i'm gonna at least give it a try.

I dont think that an auther making an emu is a totally unselfish act. By making an emu, they improve their own skills, and therefore have earned something for themselves, in addition, they get a new emulator :p

Of corse, the do work very hard, and im extremely grateful for that.

Thanks, emu authers :D

So while we are on the topic, how hard is it to make a game-specific emulator? Something like take OSnes9x and rework it so it only plays Chrono Trigger, but with a higher accuracy rating? I mean there is no practical use because some people would make them for some games, but not others, but it would give the popular ones new breath.

It really seems like the 'new emulator' scene is slowing down. It was mentioned about the GBA emulator for the Gp32, but the last time I saw an update for that there was no sound, and the rom size was still rather low wasnt it? Whatever happened to that?

at first there was every day an update for the gba emu,
now the latest update is two months ago. :(
btw. The rom size is in the lastest versions unlimited
Are there still people working on it?

they guy (Enf65) has actually turned it into a school project.

He decided to give it a rest during his holiday. Either hes preparing for a single, good releace, or he's still on holiday.

He used to make so many releaces so he could put it on the net, then go to another computer, re-download and upgrade it, then upload it once again, instead of using a floppy disc.
