My current plan is to take a mini 2-port USB 2.0 hub and put that + small usb drive guts inside the Pandora so that I have an extra some GB of permanent storage AND a usb host port capable of all 3 speeds (wire 2nd hub port to Pandora's original one) :)

While I'm at it I might end up finding space for some extra tiny usb gadget and get something like a 4-port hub but I'm pretty sure that's as much as will fit in there. Obviously I'm removing everything except the PCBs of the things, including desoldering the physical connectors and just wiring them instead. Heh, hope I don't end up frying my Pandora or something in the end :p

It will be setup with the OS on the nand and two empty sd card sockets. You then put your apps and stuff on these sd cards.

Cheapie SDHC cards (16g+) are NOT SAFE for constant use (Id Est, housing an OS), burst access is the intended use (PMP's, digital cameras).

The cheaper large SDHC cards (A-Data, RiData, Transcend etc.) are buggy, and have a tendency to bust with constant read/write use, you've been warned :(

I'm not an expert... but I'd say stick with the bigger names; SanDisk, Kingston, when buying larger capacity cards. The cheapie bastards sacrifice quality for speed and storage, so you'll see SanDisk 16g cards are slower, and more expensive, but they work far better. ;)

Yeah, I mean for photographers they want class 6 good burst memory, but I am sure it can wear out eventually. And I thought that Kingston was a 2nd class rate brand, so far their products have not failed me at all yet though :)

I would be interested to how much space the OS will take up out of the box, and theoretically what other things will be expected to be stored on the NAND...

Most linux-live type distributions can cram a surprising amount into a couple of hundred meg, so I'd be surprised if the built-in distro used the whole NAND

It probably won't use up all of the space. The stuff you'd fill the extra space with would be utilities that you'd want to have access to all the time, independent of what SD cards you have with you. You wouldn't want to put any major applications/games/emulators on the NAND.

This one crams a surprising amount into less than 30 megs.

I don't think NAND space will be an issue at all...

With 256MB of nand, I'm sure a full custom desktop distro is possible. I've come across stripped xp os for the eeepc that reached less than 300MB. Also tinyxp about 400MB. Puppy linux, DamnSmallLinux. Whole lot of potential with 256MB of nand flash.
