Roguelikes?

One of my biggest disappointments with the GP2X was that it never got Angband (though it did get a good version of Nethack). It seems the lack of a keyboard was the main problem.
However, Pandora looks ideally suited for the purpose of playing roguelikes on the go - especially if someone is able to tailor it especially for the Pandora's array of input devices. So, is anyone with the relevant know-how interested in making Angband for Pandora? I admit I know nothing about coding, but roguelikes have always been Linux-friendly and are almost universally open-source.

I love roguelikes. Powder would be nice, as would Elona, a graphical roguelike.
oh, and progress quest would be nice

Well, a GBA emulator is in the works apparently, so it should be possible to play Powder on Pandora eventually.

being able to play NetHack is one of the main reasons i decided to go ahead and grab a p&|a now instead of waiting, but now im going to have to check out and hope for ports of Angband and ADoM after checking them out

truly any portable device of this sort would be incomplete with out such games

I have some C and C++ experience. I may try to port NetHack over myself, though if I do it'll be the graphical windows version, since that's the one I know and love.

Yay! If you do that, you'll make a lot of Pandora owners very happy.
Angband is the one I really want though.

Umm! I havent done any cross compiling before or strayed out of the system space of my current desktop before, but if any of those games are in the Debian/Ubuntu ARM repository then surely they will "just work"(tm), or am I missing something, I should have thought opening a basic window and displaying text is covered already, (X driver and Linux core) , and it`s compiled for ARM and the Debian libs, so it should just work like any other Linux application (although you might need to resolve dependencies)

The main issue as I see it will be the control method - some roguelike games may "just work" with the keyboard, but could be vastly improved for Pandora via D-pad/touchscreen implementation.

I have a bit of game development experience (checkout my web page) and I've been thinking of doing a rogue-like game for the Pandora. I probably wouldn't just port something like nethack, but I wouldn't do anything too fancy either.

I'm not really keen on the idea of using ascii art so I'm going to wait until the opengl drivers come out before I even think about it.

I was thinking about doing something like puzzle quest where you'd travel around to different dungeons on a large world map and clean them out.

What is the address of your web page?
Edit: NVM, I found your profile. Was a bit confused when hovering the mouse over your name didn't do anything! Guess I'm too used to Proboards.

Yes, please, I am praying for a few Roguelikes. Someone ported Powder to the GP2X, and that didn't even have a keyboard. If anything, these ought to be easier to do, now that we'll not be so limited on keys.

Powder would be an awesome one. As would:

http://doom.chaosforge.org/ Doom RL. Doom meets Rouge. It plays amazingly well.
http://alien.chaosforge.org/ Aliens RL. Same creator, again, fantastic.
http://ivan.sourceforge.net/screenshots.html Ivan. Stunned more folks don't play this one. Awesome stuff, dismemberments, great stuff.

And finally, one of the big pappa's of them all as far as modern fav's.

http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/ Dwarf Fortress. So many possibilities, so much to do. Interact, or just watch the Dwarf population do thier own thing.

I believe every one of these has the source on the page as well. Crossing my fingers for Ivan. I cannot stress enough how awesome it is.

Ivan is good too. DF will not port well though. It may seem demure as far as power goes but it requires tons of it.

Magic Pants: that would be awesome. i, too, enjoy games like that, many of which I have on DOSbox, so I'm excited.
(in fact, i think you should check out the commercial game "Empires & Dungeons)

Playing Nethack on the GP2X was painful. I'd love to see a port to Pandora, but I'd like to put in a plea for the ASCII version, not the graphical version! I dunno if the IBM ASCII version with the proper line walls is possible, I have too many memories of it.. :)

wouldent you have to port the ASCII version first to be able to port the graphical one?

but i am with you there, ASCII all the way!

also, Net hack song if anyone wants it http://www.partiallyclips.com/filk/nethack/

There are quite a few roguelike games one could run on the Amiga emulator.

ADOM, Angband, Moria, Nethack, Omega...
Can be found on Aminet.

I like ASCII. Playing Nethack with graphic tiles just isn't the same.

Though "Avernum" and "Geneforge" were ok for being gaphic tiled.
But they are shareware (http://www.spiderwebsoftware.com) and only for win and mac anyway.
Their Exile 3: Ruined World was for Linux, though.
Maybe they would want to jump in the commercially uncrowded linux handheld market and recompile their games for Linux on ARMs, but just never thought of it?

Actually ASCII Nethack+DOSBOX should work quite well also. It just seems wrong for nethack to be emulated...

+ A gazillion for mentioning these guys, I absolutely loved Exile games ^_^
Btw, their "Blades of Exile" game is now open source...

I love Moria, so I'll be giving that a good porting try.

Almost got it there for :gp32: before upgrading gcc killed some hacks <_<

I had a look at Angband, way back, but decided :gp32: would find it tricky.
May have another look for pandora, but it's down the list.
