Reversable USB-A connector


Possibly also too high (it must be higher than a standard receptable). If it fit it would be kind of nice, but certainly no must have feature. Nothing I would trade anything else off for.
 
Through-hole may be good for large external connectors, just for mechanical strength
 
The USB-A is a a surface mount part, the USB-A + SATA is a through hole device in those pictures. Even though the USB-A connector is surface mount, it still has two through hole pins for the shield. This is good for mechanical stability. Using a fully through hole device would not improve the mechanical strength much, and would prevent components on the opposite side of the board where the pins come through the board.
