Pyra, wacom support?

Hello, this is a question I'm relaying for my girlfriend. She's an artist and is looking at the pyra as a possible portable device to hook her Cintiq into. The cintiq physically requires an HDMI, and USB for it to operate. My question is, for the software side, has anybody had success with wacom here. I know wacom support works with Ubuntu right out of the box,and I theorize that those drivers might be able to be adapted over, but once again I'm not entirely sure if they're closed source or a product of those open source drivers I've seen in the past.
 
There are opensource drivers for wacom devices "xf86-input-wacom" in the Debian mainline. I don't see why this device couldn't be made to work for the Pyra. It would probably work simply by installing them from the repo.

Thankfully Wacom provides open source drivers via the Linuxwacom project.
 
So I think it there's a good probability of Wacom tablets being supported. Seems wacom tablets work already on Arch Rpi:

Too bad that Cintiq (non-companion) require AC power, otherwise Pyra+Cintiq combo would be fully portable (but eat battery like crazy :p ).

wondering if a battery pack could be made. Girlfriends hopes are to just carry it all in a small suitcase. Next time im over at her place I should inspect the adapter and see what its ratings are.

From wacom site:

  • Power Supply Input       100 to 240 VAC, 50/60Hz
  • Power Supply Output    19 VDC, 1.58 A (max)
  • Power Consumption Max. Power Consumption: 9.0 W, 1 W or less when asleep 0.5 W or less when off
So not that much, but probably high enough for USB power to not be able to handle (specially on a portable like Pyra).

Shouldn't be too hard to hack up a battery powered DC-AC inverter:

9 Watts is a bit of power. You probably don't want to step it up first, only to step it down with the AC converter. To keep it portable, Li-ion battery packs are probably preferred for weight and size reason. Then you want a DC-DC booster probably, if the DC-DC converter in the wacom is picky about voltage levels.

And with rechargable batteries, you want some kind of charge level indicator to avoid killing your batteries by discharging them too deeply.

To estimate the batteries you want, multiplying the voltage with capacity (Ah) will give you watt hours. The device apparently uses a maximum of 9 Watts, so 9 watt hours per hour.
 
I know it is a waste to step up the voltage only to step it down later

But a Cintiq goes for almost $1000 so I figured going thru the AC converter would be a bit safer.

I do not know much about ac/dc current and such, but I do know that Sony VTC4/5s have 2100/2600 mahs and a 30 amp max continuous discharge rate. They are commonly used in Mechanical Mod E-Cigarettes by users who want a little more oomph ^_­^

They're also 18mm diameter / 65mm length, in my opinion not too large. I don't know if this helps but just wanted to let you know :)
 
FWIW, I bought a cheapo no-brand pen digitiser from my supermarket for not more money than I was prepared to waste, and was pleasantly surprised when it worked out of the box in Linux. Okay, so it only drives the mouse, and getting the in-built hotkeys and other features working is likely a bit of work, but I was pleasantly surprised. So driver-wise I wouldn't be too surprised if a Wacom at least does something out of the box, and the Pyra will br able to handle the HDMI port - only that 9W power consumption might be challenging, although I wonder, at 5V with 100% efficiency (uh yeah, granted) that's less than an extra 2000 mA.


I recall the Pandora's mini-USB socket can put out only 500mW, but I don't know about the host port. With all the extra ports the Pyra has might it be able to pump out approaching the right figure?
 
Assuming a 6000 mAh battery, that wacom would drain the pyras battery in about 2 hours all on its own
I know I'm either going to have to come up with a battery pack, or just create an extension cord setup for both. Battery packs would be better. Getting batteries would be the easy part. Getting the charging mechanism and what not sorted out.. that would be tricky for my end.

Wacom Intuos 4 Pro worked out of the box on Fedora 20, in-built buttons included. Only problem was lack of an UI to assign hotkeys to the buttons (so a bit X11 conf tweaking is needed).

Claims 19V output at 3A, which should be enough for running the Cintiq. Only thing missing would be a adapter from 30 pin (which connects to Cintiq) to DC plug (which connects to battery).

And I think that's all the info we need to make this work. :D Now just need work out the courage to try this on a real Cintiq. ^_^

EDIT:

After some tinkering I managed to install Chrubuntu on my Samsung ARM Chromebook and get my old Wacom Graphire 3 to work properly (with pressure sensitivity). At first it did not work because of missing kernel module driver (wacom.ko), but once I compiled and installed it the tablet started working perfectly.

So as long as Pyra includes this driver (and a few other wacom packages) it should support Wacom tablets out of the box.
