Psp Gonna Be Hurting Soon

To hype demand for UMDs, Sony is said to be pushing an adapter that would let PSPs play UMDs on televisions.

So basically I buy a UMD/DVD bundle, put the UMD into my PSP, hook it up to the TV and watch the movie just like on DVD? What a great idea! :D
I severely doubt that the PSP will be dieing soon, but this move kinda strikes me as pretty dumb.... and I am not surprised at all about waning UMD sales, have a look at the size of that screen - and furthermore, are there actually people that watch a two hour movie on a handheld?

And its lower a resolution than dvd minus any extras

There a waste of space.. buy a few memory sticks and rips your dvd's .. you'll save battery power too.

Yes, me.

And i started with it on the GP32.

You're a braver man than I am :D I mean, watching a Simpsons episode or some other short series, OK, I did that. But watching a full length movie on a ahdnheld? Won't your arm get tired?

On the other hand I have to admit that I don't watch TV in the first place, so maybe I am biased....

i have one of those stands with the speakers on the side that the psp plugs into next to my computer.. As i'm playing computer games or working on something at home, i can have a movie playing right next to me, and also taking trips in the car, its good as well, no need to go buy one of those portable dvd things with the screen.

I think the people that bought this system for the multimedia part will be very upset. I do hope this wakes up the sleeping giant (SONY) and they start focusing on some games for the PSP. Can they handle three systems right now? Maybe with the PS3 coming out. They will begin to phase out their support for PS2 and point themselves in the direction of PSP and PS3. I really don't think they have been worried about the PSP. I think they have all their attention on the PS3 for later this year. <_<

it's not sony that has to spend more time on UMD games it's the 3rd part publishers. Sony isnt the on cranking out dozens of rehash games it's EA, Activition and Capcom. they're the most prolific 3rd party publishers in the buisness and just how many original titles have they produced?

Sony published atleast 8 original titles since launching the PSP.

You have to remember movie and game production are two totally separate things failure in one is NOT directly atributable to success in the other, Video games could completely CEASE for the PSP and it wouldnt effect anything other than the way they market the PSP.

Also just because other studios might pull out of UMDs dosent mean Universal (a subsidiary of Sony one one of the most productive studios in Hollywood) will, they'll just keep on pumping them out. And as for watching 2 hr. movies on the PSP, it's a whole hell of alot lighter than a portable DVD player with a screen and battery. I saw a kid on the train with this huge 7 inch screen and a battery pack on it while I was carrying a PSP with 2 movies on a memory stick.

Nah, it's the UMD idea itself that was kind of dumb. They actually want MORE money for a lot of the UMDs I've seen than they do for the DVD of the same movie. Plus, like you mentioned, screen/resolution and battery issue.

Though I have watched several episodes of Naruto (about 1.5 hours worth) on my GP2X at work.

I read in EGM that sony will be dropping PSP support in two years.

Though I doubt they saw this kind of thing coming, people hating it before it even got a chance to get some good titles. But.. that may be precisely the point. No good games for a handheld that's been out for a year, plus? Honestly, due to the games I had, the ONLY thing I used my PSP for was watching movies. The first Untold legends was complete rubbish, in the vein of such much hated (by me) hack-and-slash games like Diablo, plus the pseudo-Metal Gear trading card came? Please. They can't even do a port of Prince of Persia correctly.

Honestly, if stuff starts heading downhill for them, they'll get the picture and drop the 'PSP hotspot' feature of the PS3, which has to cost them money. Things aren't looking too good for Sony right now, as 800 USD is the estimated cost for the PS3, in production. So, either that means that they'll be losing a hell of a lot of money per unit sold, or consumers just won't buy them at 800 bucks. And guess why it costs so much? BluRay. The DRM shit that they're going to kill us all for is costing them bundles and bundles.

This is going to be a bad few years for Sony's gaming faction.

Was that by any chance in the quarterman section? Because if it was it's a good chance it's a load of crap, I havent trusted a bit of information from EGM in years.

I believe it was in the 'Next Gen' issue a few months back. It was part of the main feature, if I remember correctly. It was my roommates, so I can validate it tomorrow, if I remember.

Watching films on the PSP is a very nice experience. Really, on the train watching films, just great!

But have any of us bought many UMDs? I haven't bought one! But I have hundreds of films encoded for my Memstick...

I've never bought a UMD and don't plan to, There was word that they were going to start packaging DVDs and UMDs together for a slightly higher price (a $19 dvd would probably become $24 or something like that) but I dunno how true this is.

Next Generation Magazine? they still make that? I thought it was canceled along with several other magazines from that publisher a while back.

I am sick of tired of Sony forcing firmware upgrades on their customers just to keep out the homebrew developers, so i finally sold it on ebay. (still up for bids btw ) ;) and ordered a GP2X form Lik-Sang.
Open development platform here i come!

It might be sony worried about the massive piracy on the PSP at the moment, I mean look on Ebay...

But that still makes Sony bad! Why should we have to pay for a game? WHy can't we steal them?

It just sucks that Sony want us to PAY for their games!!!!

Humph!
