I downloaded PocketSNES Wiz 650 and I'm trying to get it working. It came with 2 emulators, a pocketsnes.gpe and a pocketsnes_fast.gpe.

I tried both out this morning before I gifted the wiz to my son. pocketsnes.gpe would freeze, but I successfully loaded a game with pocketsnes_fast.gpe and did a level and it worked fine.

This afternoon, both of the gpe files load up, but freeze before I can load a ROM. I'm wondering if I have either old versions of this emulator, or if there's a setting somewhere that I need to tweak. Or perhaps there's a different emulator I could try out.

This is for my six year old, so stability is something I'm hoping for. I'd like to get SNES emulation and Mame emulation working. Any advice on what emulators to load and any menu apps to make working with them simple would be much appreciated.

Your version is old, the new pocketsnes has been released yesterday.
Here's the link to download it: http://www.gp32spain.com/foros/showthread.php?p=1232085&posted=1#post1232085
take psnes_7.2.0qf_wiz.zip
A fresh install might solve your problem, maybe.

If the new version of pocketsnes doesn't fix your problem, try to run pocketsnes under GINGE.
