vemode is really easy to use, and totally free :)
for more advanced converting I would recommend virtualdubmod.
VirtualDubMod comes with a package called AutoGK (Gordian Knot) that does everything for you, there are some hidden options with alt + F9 (can't recall correctly, but something like that), I would check the compatibility with DVD Divx player chipsets box, unsure which chip, but only if you have trouble with encoded Bframes.

That program will take care of everything for you, I even got a 700MB Divx of FF Advent Children down to 300MB by selecting to keep the aspect ratio and then putting 320 into the box for the screen width.

PocketDivx is all you need.

Free and easy to use.

Just Google for it.

PocketDivx is good for when your encoding .avi but .wma and mpegs It would'nt recognise for me.

Why did you try 1.0b when 1.1b is out?! I tried my old version 1.0b and it crashed, too...it must have an expiration or something. But the new version 1.1b works great!

Anyway, you must've picked the PSP or iPOD or something...scroll down the list and select GP2x, then press encode. That's about it for the basics. After you get one that way, then you can load the advanced options & start messing around with cropping, bitrate, size, audio settings, etc...but get the basics down before you mess with any of that.

It's very easy, you just rushed through it without really looking at it.

My mistake - I got 1.1b but it only has psp as an output option???? I looked at the config.xml file and it has other options - vemode doesn't seem to be reading it - and now I cannot get back on vemode.corecodec.org - it times out!!!

This is in config.xml has these devices but I only get PSP??

<DEVICE name="PSP" label="Sony PSP">

<DEVICE name="IPOD" label="Apple iPod">

<DEVICE name="Zodiac" label="Tapwave Zodiac">

<DEVICE name="PalmW" label="Palm T3/T5/TX/LifeDrive">

<DEVICE name="Palm" label="Palm Treo/Zire/E2/C">

<DEVICE name="PPC" label="Pocket PC">

<DEVICE name="VGA" label="Pocket PC VGA">

<DEVICE name="GP2X" label="GP2X">

I moved the GP2X device section to the top but still only get psp?!!?!!

Cheers

fred

You don't see the whole list right?

Change the screen to a bigger resolution. :)

Not good form replying to oneself but here goes anyway, I deleted all devices from config.xml except forGP2X - success! Burtt why doesn't the drop down list populate correctly?

When I try to encode an .wmv (South Park Reloaded high-quality in this case) I always get an error about avisynth.dll, which couldn't load. Anyone know how to fix this?

No its not a scrfeen resolution problem its just the dropdown only has one item - anyway I solved that by removing all devices bar gp2x.

I also get an occaisional error when running vemode.exe and that is MSHTA.exe generated an error - a log file has been written and vemode closes. Whats that all about and where can i find the log file - BTW I'm using w2k sp3

hmm, that's strange - i've never really had any problems with it... I usually use it on an XP machine, but I've used it in the past for encoding Zodiac movies on my 2k SP3 machine.

Maybe you should try uninstalling it and re-installing it. But this time, re-install it to c:\Vemode.

Also, you may try contacting the author, his address is on his site, but it seems to be down at the moment....it'll probably be up soon.

Here is the link anyway:
http://vemode.corecodec.org

Also - the .log files are located in the folder you installed VeMode to. There seems to be 3 .log files in my folder: ffminfo.log, ffmpeg.log, & ffshot.log. You may have another .log file that I don't due to your error.
You can read the .log file by opening it with notepad.

good luck!

PocketDivx encoder recognizes mpg for me (I didn't actually finish encoding one, but loaded it and did a preview and it worked). This thing even recognizes my tivo ty files. I've played with a lot of encoders, and it by far is the easiest.
