Have those people having difficulty getting their machines to recognise the GP2X, tried mashing buttons in the USB option in the Settings menu?
My laptop only noticed mine the very first time I plugged it in, and from that point on nada/nothing/zilch (tried a few different cables/sockets etc). Simply pressing disconnect (B?) in the USB screen has seemed to sort it out permanently and now it's picked up by W2K every time.
/me hopes he's not being thick and wasting you good folks' time
EDIT: Forgot to mention, the unit was on and plugged in via USB at the time of doing the disconnect thing from the menu
