I got my GP2x on Christmas day and have to confess was horribly dissapointed. It looked like some cheap psp ripoff bought from a market stall. I got a tiny hair trapped under the screen protector despite huge efforts not too which has been bugging me every time I boot it (although not while playing games). The emulation is certainly 'retro' in that it reminded me of trying to get stuff running on a ten year old 486. The battery life is not only short but completely random. I have a callous on my thumb. I want to cry.

I daren't tell my wife how utterly shite this thing is as she spent all her money on it for me, after I dropped several hints during November last year. She was going to get me a DS.

I don't like feeling stupid, and the GP2x is making me feel like a prize bumwipe. I am going to put it away now and not look it, or the file archive for some time. If by then some miracles have happened and it becomes the machine I was dreaming about then I will retract these comments.

I'm very sorry you don't like your christmas present.

What are we supposed to do about it again?

For the record, I love my GP2x. Just thought everybody might be interested to hear that.

I'm sorry that you aren't getting anthing out of it but it is still relatively early days. I wish they sold them down my market.

Surgical spirit for the callous.

In all seriousness though, if you feel like that but may change your mind why not try to arrange to loan it to someone that hasn't got one. In that way it is being used and not just collecting dust, and you never know that person might be able to contribute to the developments you are looking for.

Maybe arrange a fixed initial period, during which time that person could suss if they like it and save for a unit of their own.

Just an idea.

Have you tried the better emulators like DrMDx, SquidgeSNES, and GNUBoy? And what part of "put the files on your SD card and put the card in the GP2X" are you having trouble with? I bet we can help. ;)

Well, you're entitled to your own opinion, but coming on here and complaining about it won't do much. Need I mention I love my GP2X too? And that I've been playing it for three days without changing the batteries, and it's survived a lot of playtime.

Okay, so the joystick isn't that nice. But there are several mods that make it perfect! The only problem I've had with it is it doesn't have any rubber grip on it. (Here, little gamecube controller.. *SLICEANALOGSTICK*). And as for looking like a cheap PSP ripoff? It's a hell of a lot more comfortable, the screen is a bearable size, and if anything the PSP looks like an expensive GP2x ripoff. Damned fingerprints everywhere. And the analog stick on the PSP feels cheaper than the PopStation Portable. Mmm. PopStation.

Everyone has some doubts about the quality of the hardware. I was a little worried about the rubber bits, but they've survived me intact. Hell, I've dropped the thing three times since I got it and the only side effects I found was the headphone quality got BETTER.* But the software is awesome. Fullspeed Mega Drive and Game Boy? Yay! Soon to be perfect SNES? Yay! Chance to develop my own games? Yay!

You gotta love your gamepark ;-;

*Not recommended.

Oh, and $13.

I guess if you are *not* a geek and not patient, then the GP2x doesn't worth it.
Otherwise, this console is fantastic:
-VIDEO
-MP3
-AAs - not dependant of any battery maker!
-Emulators
-Firmwares
-Utilities (to change screen settings and CPU settings)
- music player as oldplay to play old tunes and mods

I mean, if you like PSP and DS, then you are not the kind of people liking seeking solutions on regular basis: typically, I will say that you are not the guy who will work for tech support.
You like to pay and get it NOW! Which, I will say, has never been the best way to like computers...So BE a SONY and NITENDO fan, ans spend all your money of mario, kong and 3d *un-interesting* games. 3d power and marketing is not enough the make a console multiusages.

The GP2x console can continue to live forever, as there is *NO* major limitation. Let's take the Zodiac: big issues were the CPU, the joystick and battery life. All have been adressed by GPH with the GP2x. And, definitively, there will always be a developer to push the GP2x to its maximum potential.

So, let's wait and see! :) The future is GP2x and open source community!

some people want a machine to wash the dirty laundry (i'd recommend a washing machine), the rest of us just want a gp2x.

Thanks for the kind offer, but its not that I cant get anything to run, more that its not exactly a joy to do so - and respect to the developers of all the emus - its great work. my issue really is with the machine itself - compared to running mame on a pc with an x-arcade controller it kinda sucks. I suppose I expected the build to be more like the quality of a gba or neogeo pocket. I never bought a GP32 so maybe my expectations were unrealistic.

It also remindes me of the early days of emulation when you would spend far more time fiddling about than actually playing and maybe I just dont have the patience anymore. I'm not trying to piss people off by being derogatory of the 2x, just I find it hard to continue pretending that it's cool when theres a constant nagging doubt in the back of my mind that actually it isn't. I got mad at people who bailed early on, but the rate of progression isn't a good indicator of where things will be in a year's time. At the end of the day its not a cheap bit of kit I find myself getting more frustration than enjoyment from it. :(

Wow
Surprising how much people love to say how great there GP2X is but how different the attitudes when somebody doesn't like it (Even though he payed for it)
Some of you guys really need to mellow out a bit, It won't do any harm to you or your precious GP2X if people are honest about there findings ;)

the_catt: i felt exactly like you shortly after christmas, i thought to myself what an idiot..this thing really sucks and was a waste of money...but then things started developing and now everythings great i reckon.

sure, we all know the joystick sucks ass, but what can we do, really?

well we can get a new joystick cap (davec) or make your own mod.
and the devs can impliment case2 joystick config into their games/emulators. heh

the "right = up+right" thing is the only thing stopping the machine from being all that i wanted/expected.

if that gets fixed/workedarounded then i'll be happy happy joy joy.
