Hello

Just wondering if there was no Pandora what would you all be using for your retro

game playing ( Handheld ) etc ?

iPad or iPhone. Good combination of HD TV-out, bluetooth controller support, portability and some cracking good emulators from Robert Broglia. Note: I tend only to emulate classic consoles, nes/snes/sms/smd for the most part.

I've also set up a Motorola DEFY for PSX emulation, it works pretty well... but still doesn't top converting games to EBOOT and running them on an old PSP.

Once upon a time I used my netbook, and still do occasionally for N64 emulation- I can plug N64 games into my Retrode and play them right off the cart.

Nothing.

After the GP2X didn't work out for me, I gave up on bothering entirely, and decided to wait until something suited to my requirements came along. If such a thing hadn't shown up, I would have continued to not bother, and just stuck to my real consoles. :p (EDIT: By that, I mean, instead of emulation.)

Good question.

Guess I would still have my old GP2X 100.

I'd still be using my PSP/PC combo. I have to admit the PSP was pretty good for emulation...just had a crappy community around it with little to no updates once an emu came out. Though I'd like to say that as far as PS1 emu goes the Pandora runs the games better than my PSP or PS1 does.

I've had GP32 (BLU), GP2X F100, Wiz, Canoe, PSP, NDSL and Pandora.

The GP32, although a lovely device, just doesn't cut it for emulation of the systems I want. GP2X was very much loved, and still is. Wiz was a pile of barely usable cack. Canoe sits on a shelf gathering dust - and is also not a patch on the GP2X (surprisingly, the GP2X controls are better than the Canoe!). PSP was a pain to get rooted, and has a blurry as hell screen, so sits next to the canoe and GP32. The NDS is wonderful for homebrews and NDS/GBA/GBC/GB games, but for emulation blows donkeys cocks. The Mrs has the NDS now.

So all in all, it would have to be the GP2X. There's just something about it that appeals to me.

D.

I have a Pandora and my Dingoo A320 with Dingux dual boot is probably my most played retro handheld console. It's less expensive, lighter and easier to carry around. Great for NES/GB/GBC/GBA/SMS/SMD/Neo*Geo/CPS emulation. The Pandora gets played a lot also but gets used more often for practical stuff.

I've got a couple GP2Xs and a Wiz. One of the GP2Xs has a really nice dpad mod courtesy of DaveC, but doesn't have working USB. The other has a not so nice replacement cap (first one broke) and broken SD. But it's still the preferable choice for testing since I can at least ssh onto it. Needless to say, to me the Wiz beats the GP2X F100 in every way (don't have an F200), the digital stick on the F100 feels totally unusable to me. The only thing the GP2X really has on the Wiz is a bigger screen and less cramped form factor, but the OLED quality makes up for this.

To me one of the worst aspects of the GP2X was the power and USB connectors being on the side of the unit. Good luck actually using it while it's plugged in, especially if you don't have angle connectors.

I don't really use the Pandora but if I wanted handheld gaming it'd be first choice without a question, especially if I don't need to use the shoulders too much or the nubs (both aren't very good on my unit). The dpad is top notch and having the keyboard around is surprisingly nice, since you can have auxiliary functions in it.. potentially great for netplay since you can actually send messages. My next best choice would be my PSP-2000, if it had CFW. My 1000 is all scratched up and the ghosty screen is a real let down, but the controls aren't bad if you mod the dpad. Not really sure what the controls are like on the 2000 since I haven't used it to play anything controller demanding..

This probably isn't what the OP means by retro gaming, but one non-emulator area where I feel the Pandora has no equal is for playing Megazeux games (old retro-style game creation engine). The keyboard gives you easy control mapping without a lot of headache, although you'll probably still want to map the face buttons to something else.

Since I'm still waiting for my pandora there is no if there's only what I am using now whenever I get around to it, laptop PC, TP2 smartphone and 3ds. Mostly use my 3ds for when I'm out commuting and or idle since I don't like worrying about my phone battery and they don't last as much as I would like them to and when I'm on my computer I'm too busy surfing web pages to play games.
