New Gp2x Mk2 Review.

I'm mostly interested in the new stick + cap. Is it possible to send my GP2X in to get this newer MK2 model when it comes out?

As for early adoption, I got my DS and GP2X the week they came out, so revisions 20 and 8 months down the line, respectively, don't bother me too much. Plus it seems that the old 2x screen is a bit better than this new one. Joy :)

Except that the new screen is not interlaced... or is that fixed on all GP2X's with firmware 2.0? I wouldn't know. I, as well, bought my GP2X the week it came out (to GP32z, that is, which was a little later than everywhere else) but recently sent it back to get the insane filcker on the screen fixed. It should return this week, though, so I guess I'll see then.

EDIT: This quick edit feature is sweet! Try it out!

I mean, is there any way that a firmware can fix this on the current units?

I heard somewhere that the interlacing is due to the video chip being designed for DVD players?
But it suggested that the visibility of this is due to bad coding, I don't know if that means they can fix it or just make it negligable

The original screen maker washed their hands of the problem thus unless someone figures it out, it can't be fixed.

Maybe if gamepark had bought 100,000 of those screens they would have been more helpful...

hmm well i dont see any problem with the stick now i have DaveCs cap and i dont have any scanlines or interlaceing the gp2x screen is the best out of all my handhelds ds is to dark and psp has a stupid blur (not complaining though got it for free:D) f/w 2.0 has made the 2x better than all other handhelds imho, the mk2 doesnt interest or bother me at all my 2x is perfict as it is :D now all we need is full speed snes emu :D

The old screen wasnt bright enough in outdoor areas. If I was somewhere with even a bit of sunlight, the screen was almost impossible to see. Does the new screen correct this?

Craig,

Has GPH flat-out refused to replace the stick with a superior switch or a simple D-Pad? I mean, this is an improvement as it'll get rid of the Diagnol bias the stick has, and the new cap is always welcome for users who don't know of DaveC's or don't wish to buy one separately-- but it still boils down to that the switch the stick is based on is simply a very poor choice for a game system (at least, when it comes to the majority of games, emulated or not.)

Just to others--

About interlacing- I wish people would stop saying 'is it fixed'. Interlacing is a feature, an attribute; not a bug. Your TV's interlaced, many of your game consoles are, DVD players output interlaced signals, DVDs contain interlaced video .. this is a normal feature. Appearance of scanlines is a software issue, usually-- an implementation problem. Interlacing is useful technology.

My gp2x doesn't have scanlines that hurt my eyes either. ;)

Seriously, a lot of the electronic devices I own have interlaced screens. It's noticable when you move your head up and down and around and stuff, but other than that, the screen is perfectly viewable. It's not a huge problem on the gp2x, unless you have the lcd fix slider all the way to the right...

Will I be able to buy the official new cap or should I just go ahead and buy a DaveC cap?

You can buy one ... and DaveC isn't making any more, at least for now.

One thing I noticed that Cragix said regarding the official GPH caps:

"They're made of Nylon, the same material as DaveC's cap"

Nylatron GS is a nylon and molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) composition. DaveC's cap is made of this very strong metal-infused Nylon.

The GPH cap is not. Therefore,

DaveC's cap > GPH's cap

(In my opinion, that is ;))

I'm looking into if you can plug and play the screen into the old GP2X.
If the screens are pretty easily swappable would you be selling the screens seperately? I would buy a new screen in a second just to get rid of those damn scanlines.

I got my replacement GP2x early March, just updated to Firmware 2.0 and it is great. No scanlines (still), fast boot times (about 11 seconds or thereabouts). I remember the first GP2x I got, in mid December, bad scanlines, bad battery life, couldn't update firmware; a real disappointment - I sent it back. There have been ongoing improvements to the GP2x in the last months, no doubt. It is a good machine now.

It is good that they rotated the joystick, this is what many people were crying out for. Craig - has this made a big difference to accurate directional control, or is it simply "better but not perfect"? It would be interesting for people to know. I found the stock joystick awful to use as it often didn't respond the the direction I was pressing, so (as everyone knows) I made an alternative; however the vast majority of users will be using their stock stick still, so will want to know - if the improvement is worthwhile, people might buy a replacement model.

So far we have had an improved transister to remove scanlines, better joystick (rotated), better cap, better firmware, faster boot-times, more complete software, better integration and a change of firmware developer. Everything is getting so much better now. Give it a few months more it may be worth buying another unit.

Craig, your review article was very good and interesting. Is the 240Mhz quoted in the review the faster speed of the new model, or was it a typo of 200Mhz? This would be nice to know!
