Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone has taken a look at Nano-X (formaly Micro Windows). It is a small X windows implimentation for embeded systems. It seems like there is some good possabilities with it. Just wanted to know if anyone is looking at porting this or something similar? It would be hell awsome to have the GP2X to use as a PDA replacement. Would just add another notch of perfection to the already impressive list that the GP2X has.

URL: Micro Windows

Anyways, just thought someone might have missed this.

But I thought gplinux was never really released or wasn't quite useable.
lol, it was released and usefull :) (especially if you had a chatboard which i do not have).
there where several beta's 1 using nano, I used it a few times for reading webpages on the gp32 and xpdf works (but that was terribly slow).

You could always just buy a Zodiac. That's a PDA and game system all in one!

Seriously, I don't see the advantage to making the GP2X into a PDA.

Seriously? You dont see the advantage???
Apart from being able to play games, play/create homebrew, play all the old-school emulated platforms, listen to music, watch movies, view images, look at maps and everything else you can do for the price of a few dozen beer, you don't think it would be advantagious to also be able to use it as a PDA?

What do you suggest; buy a palm as well just for the PDA apps when the gpx2 could do it all for no extra cost?

crazy...

EDIT: Spelling

And everything with the same device, so you don't need to care several devices. :D

Just go buy a Zodiac. It does exactly what you are looking for and it has a 3D chip in it and commercial games.

The GP2X doesn't have a touch screen. No keyboard and no easy way to connect one (the USB port isn't powered so no USB keyboards I'm afraid). The old GP32 chatboard might be an option but will need to be hacked again to make it work.

No, the GP2X has many things that the Zodiac hasn't.

You don't need a touchscreen for all PDA-things and I'm sure that there'll be a keyboard which you are able to connect to it.

Why the hell don't you want extra-capabilities for the GP2X? The more you can make with a device, the better it is.

IMHO, the better it plays video games, the better it is. I want GPH to make decisions that make it the best handheld game platform available. It remains to be seen how good it will be, but I've already bet my $200 on them.

I'm a little disappointed that they didn't add in a 3D chip. (NOTE: 3D chips do 2D just as well as 2D accelerators.) I'm kinda of shocked that they didn't at least choose an ARM with built-in floating point or at least tacked on an FP co-processor. I would have paid another $100 more for a GP2X with an FP/3D chip onboard.

I wouldn't because I don't have more money and I'm sure others are in the same situation. The reason why gamepark broke into two companys was that the GPH-people wanted to make a device that everyone can effort, whereas GP just wants to make the fastest handheld. I preordered a GP2X because I prefer it over the XGP. The goal of the GP2X is to make the best 2D-handheld, not the best 3D-handheld and you clearly don't need a 3D-chip for that. I also don't see much advantage of a 3D-chip...

I wouldn't have. That's one of the biggest points to the system, to have the most power for the least amount of money. Which it easily succeeds in doing.

2D accelerators do 2D alot better than a 3D chip does 2D. The 3D chips are designed to handle 2D bitmaps to fill in 3D polygons, so they have some decent 2D support, but just aren't as good at handling larger, higher quality 2D bitmaps.

While 3D hardware acceleration would have been nice, I have to agree with the rest of the guys in the forum.... this answered my prayers for so little money that I cant help but think that GPH is out there for the community, not themselves.

3D WILL be doable by software. Will we get PSX games? Probably not. But Quake will probably be very playable by the middle of the GP2X's day, and since its open source, you can make lots of different, interesting games with it.

Also, I don't want to see my batteries wear out twice as fast because of a 3D chip. 2D Accelerators tend to use less power.

Edit: Typo, typo, typo, typo.........typo typo typo!!!! grrr enough edits
