No playlist support, but they are sorted alphabetically. One of the strongest features of the gp2x is not the included software (which is a bit poor in general) but the ease of development. There are already replacements either released or in development for most of the functions in the firmware.
These are usually open source (often ports of pc software) and the developers are pretty good at listening to feature requests. If you don't like the built in mp3 player don't worry, you'll find one that you do like soon enough. There aren't many devices out there that can offer you that.
FluffyPanda and
Jansport: You two just convinced me to buy one of these things.
Last night my I spent 4 hours researching this thing after finding it on a lark on Wikipedia. My Latin wife inquired about the Brain Game for the Nintendo DS, so I researched that. I researched the PSP, and I thought "I hate $30-50 per game. What do I like in my games? Moddability!" So I looked up MODS for each system, and learned that Sony has declared open-war with their high-tech PSP users, and that the DS isn't that easy to
do stuff with unless you want free games.
Reading through the history of all handhelds, I saw a link for the GP32, and GPX2... and now I'm here.
When my friend, Brandon, heard that it's, as I described it, "A hand-held that runs emulators, MAME, NES, SNES, Genesis, even NEO GEO, but no GBA yet" he said "That sounds handy!"
Also last night, I found out that my linear knowledge of C++ and modern knowledge of C#.NET will apply for this device, and I can do something I loved with my C64, but sadly was too young to do much of:
program for it!
When I talked to my lovely Latina, about the costs and benefits of the DS, PSP and GP2X, she pointed out "Anything that gives you freedom is better."
From a country where not all things are free, fair, or uncorrupted - I'd say she's right.
