Trying to get MESS up and running to emulate Atari 7800.
Anyone know where I can find an Idiots guide. I'm going round in circles and not getting anywhere.

Thanks

There is no "idiot's guide", but you could start by reading the included readme file.

thanks, once I worked out how to read the read me it was all pretty simple, I had not re-named the BIOS.

Hi there,

As TelcoLou mentioned there is no idiot's guide per se, however it's pretty easy to use. :)
The readme has a lot of info in there which can be helpful (maybe it's too much info??). I should probably write a FAQ or quickstart guide.

The *only* thing you need to do is find the Atari 7800 mess bios. (and be sure it's compatible with mess .102.)
That's it. If you put an a7800.zip file in the bios directory and the emulator quits out on you, it's due to the wrong BIOS.

Let us know how it goes for you.

Good news is I've made some performance enhancements to gp2xmess and Atari 7800 runs somewhat faster and ColecoVision runs a *lot* faster. Haven't tested the others yet. Still working on it...

glad you got it going, seems you figured it out as I was typing a response. :)

You mentioned once you could read the README. Did you have issues reading it? I do all my work on Linux and maybe the file has UNIX linefeeds which programs like Notepad don't like.

Looking into it...

Baaaahhh, why does this forum always append replies into my existing reply? Drives me cray-zee. :)

Auto-post-merging, for the victory!

Great news, telengard! Quick question: How good are my chances to some day be able to code again on the TI-99/4A? (I'm thinking of possible USB keyboard support)

Hiya TelcoLou,

You are not insane! I've read recently that the SDL library I'm using might support it. Seriously though I'd just install MESS on your computer, they have a nice debugger interface you could use now too, it's pretty slick. :) I won't stop you from doing Extended BASIC on the TI99/4a w/ gp2xmess though, hehe.

I have a pathological need to code my GG Allin simulator game on the TI, and doing so using the MESS port on the '2X would be the ultimate punk-rock coding experience

... though I'm seriously considering firing it up on my old laptop ... hell, I may just set it up to boot right into the TI front-end

Hehe, well he would be proud for sure! Although the poor TI. No blood please. ;) Booting it right to the TI sounds like a good idea. :)

I'm an old punker myself. Cool to find a kindred punk spirit. I'm a big fan of DKs, Black Flag, Fear, Circle Jerks, Clash, etc. Not too big on the "new" punk. Not sloppy enough. :)

Your cool factor just shot up by 100!!

I got to see the 'Jerks back in'87 ... great show!

I'm inspired ... I have to work this coming weekend, which means I'll have a LOT of downtime. I'll set up MESS and get crackin' :D

Thanks again for all your hard work on this project :)

This sounds good, I am interested :p *dreams of fullspeed 7800 someday*

BTW there was some source around here from the PSP 7800 emu would that help? maybe it could be ported or something.

I thought ColecoVision was fullspeed now? I know if I thrashed around with the options, V KB etc it would do something and the emu would slow way down. If I exited and went back it it was fullspeed though.

Thanks, can't wait to test it.

There is a lot of info in the read me for someone not very (at all) techy.
You are correct, notpad did'nt like the file, but i'm windows based I'm afraid.
I downloaded the emu from your site, is this the speedier version, or is that still to be released?
Love this btw, playing all the NTSC homebrews and hacks that otherwise I have no chance of playing.

Thanks

Hehe, Atari 7800 I've got a little faster although not as much as I expected and that one I have spent a lot of time trying to get better. Optimizing is a real time sink. RE: Prosystem/PSP 7800 I don't think I could manage multiple separate emulators, just handling all the separate ones *in* gp2xmess is a lot of work and I'll be adding more. :)

I think it's possible to get 100% Atari 7800 but it will take a little while, and this is all but the Pokey carts (of which there are 2 that I know of, Commando and Ballblazer).

ColecoVision is 100% w/ frameskip of 8 currently. I think it is about 40% with no frameskip. I now have it at 85% with no frameskip and it runs 100% at about frameskip 2/3. Big improvement.

Sorry that it's a little too much info. I'm a programmer so I tend to be a little too techy and thorough. :)
I fixed the linefeeds so that the files will read without any changes on Windows. Nope, the version you got is not the improved speed one, I'll be releasing that soon. :)

Glad you are enjoying it!
