Magazines

Someone should see if Darkman would be willing to submit a weekly comic strip for the mag. I loved his strip he ran when he got his gp2x.

Cool!!! awsome!
I do think that it would be even cooler if you wright the words on the other way.
So that when you read it, you have to turn the gp2x anti clockwise and you can then hold it with one hand and flip pages with the thumb (if you hold it with the left hand).
That way you also get the pages and screen like a ordinary magazine.

Interesting suggestion, Khayman. I'll definitely experiment with that.
The only thing I can foresee that would make this difficult is that I like having room for an illustration or two, and if I turn it 90 degrees, it gets a bit narrow. But I'll give it a go.

Don't think the name is very snappy or clever. Maybe

GP2Xtra

or

GP2Xitement

Yes. Geepeetwo excitement is SO much more snappy than gippex. ^_^
I didn't see the point in trying to be too clever with the name, as I'm not really competing for customers. It's not like anyone will go "naahh... That name... Not snappy enough... I'll skip it."
If I was planning to sell the magazine, I could have spent some more time making it more "clever", but I don't really see the point as it stands.

I think the name and format are fine.

There's nothing to stop anyone else from making their own magazine with the name and format of their choice. I would do it but I'd rather leave it with creativity and artistic ability :)

My friends all call me

You'll ever need
Or I'll be left alone forever with my magazine.

I just made one page to test the scrolling thing. Unfortunately, my gp2x isn't here and I brok this damn card reader. Someone could please try this and tell me how it feels to read it like this?

Klick here.
If it is ok, I think longer articles could be done like that, so that the user just can go to the next image if he doesn't want to read tha article, and he won't have to go through multiple pages.

Cheers, David

I haven't really looked at yours, but I tried just making a bigger bitmap in Photoshop to test, and what the GP2X image viewer does is it fits the image to window, then you zoom it and scroll to the top and that's when you start reading.

This way, it's not very convenient, really, which is why it's such good luck that Wite_Noiz has started work on an "eMag viewer"!

He has? Fantastic!

As long as it will support standard images or there will be an app on every OS to convert images to the new format this will give the 'magazine scene' a big boost :)

From what I can see, the 2X (FW2?) already has SDL_image on it with full support for at least PNG (the wiki is /really/ unclear on that). Possibly JPG and GIF as well.
I'll test it out when I'm at home tonight, but if it's true that'll be really great.

I've run some of my ideas past Magnulus for what I'm planning on doing, and he seemed to like them - so keep an eye out for the first release this week or next.

I'm unusually busy this week from Wednesday; brownie points if anyone can work out why ;)

i think this is a really good idea :)

It'd be good if someone could make a standard "GP2X Magazine viewer" that can open a tarball, take the files out one by one, and display them, so downloading a new magazine would be as simple as grabbing a single file, and shoving it on your SD.

 He stole my completely unique and ingenious idea!

Hope to have a first release by the end of the week.
