I was playing Project X on WinUAE yesterday for the first time in exactly 10 years (that means I was 8 when I last had a go) I used to breeze through that game using a joystick back then, now with a keyboard (far more accurate in my opinion) I can't even get past the first level. I've noticed this increased lack of skill in alot of the classics recently. Ok so I'm only 18, but do you reckon Videogames skill decreases with age?

i think its more down to the fact you probably cant be arsed to sit and learn the attack waves of the aliens anymore, i know thats the case for me

True, I think being older my brain allows more than thing in at a time, and I've got quite a bit on my mind....always! which gets in the way.

I'll have to disagree with you. i think my skill has got better, i often find myself playing a classic game that I had problems with when i was younger and thinking to myself "i remember this game being a lot harder".

Yes, my skill definately improved in some respects as I got older, but I lost the ability to sit down and play a mind-numbing game like Gauntlet for 100 levels. However, I consider that a good thing.

One thing to mention, I actually have trouble using a keyboard for most emulated games, which is the reason I bought a USB gamepad.

why do you think gamecube is so popular among the 20-somethings? ;)

i've noticed a dropoff as i got older... i think a lot of it's due to the 'can't be arsed' factor. :)

I think I'm worse now than I was 10 or 15 years ago. For example I always seem to get whooped by 12 year olds on Xbox Live - most infuriating! Used to think I was a reasonable player. I feel senile dementure settling in now ... dribble dribble.

Definitely. Proberbly because I had less games then so I played them to death, now I can afford more. I also had only two consoles. I now have 19, a GP32 arrving in the next week and a P.C.

Also...less time.

Go play Super Mario Sunshine. It's the antithesis to your 'can't be arsed' factor. I must have played one of the obstacle courses at least 20 times. You are challenged to a race on a beach, and if you lose, you DIE. That's right, lose a life. The first level features electrified tightrope-walking 250 ft. over a lake with wind swirling around and trying to knock you off. If you make the SLIGHTEST mistake you fall to the bottom and have to make your way aaaaaall the way back up. Jumps must be pixel precise. Sometimes the camera angle shifts and your previously straight jump sends you hurting off the rope into the lake. In another level, you have to do a ridiculously complicated climb in a small, enclosed area. Unfortunately the camera is almost always looking at this enclosure from outside so a wall blocks the view completely. It is impossible to do the climb unless you keep adjusting the camera, but whilst you are doing this you will be invariably knocked off the climb and forced to do it all again by impossible-to-defeat enemies who cover the entire area.

Okay, not all Gamecube games are like this. But for anyone who expected SMS not to be frustrating, BEWARE!

It is the most frustrating games of all time. Those in between platform bits which are meant to be like the old games are a nightmare, so much so I gave up on it all together.

Older games may seem EZ, but newer games may seem hard

All newer games do is make you try something new, and cannot be arse in old games due to the simplicity of them, sure they are hard, as refered to 'Nintendo Hard', but the old games also had percise shiz and limited lives

All these new games strive for perfection in the lvls or such, or mindless roaming around till you find wtf your looking for *although old games have that, it's not a stupidly simple solution, as *lets use a enw game for example*:
*edit out anything you think is spoiling, but i was really freaking veauge*SP**
I spent 15 minuets looking for a digital pad in FFX-2 *not spoiling* after i had found the 2nd set of clues, come to find out, the 2nd pad was past the 1st one, but i'd think they'd just use the first one and do some machinal/magical shit for the door to lead me someplace else other than the 1st set of codes did

Trust me, you must fear, then conquer 'Nintendo Hard' games, they are the best of the best of making you fustrated *as with old Nintendo controllers breaking or SNES controllers... mostly i think is from RPGs and not saving often enough*

Same here. When you've only got a handful of games for one console then you'd play them to death, but now I've got 1500+ I tend to drift from one game to the next, never being particularly good at any of them!

Hmm, I've also noticed recently that i don't actually play games anymore, I just try them out. It almost seems as if my interest in video gaming is focused more on the technology behind it rather than the game itself.

I don't think its a lack of attention seeing as the last game I ever completed was Alundra, and damn that requires some noodle stirring.

dude, EXACTLY. i stopped playing PS games when emulation turned so good that you didn't need to fiddle with settings to make the game playable. i recently got the new Prince Of Persia, and i was shocked about the beautiful graphics. played it to around %50, and that's it, it's been sitting there since. the slightest frustrating part makes me just quit the whole thing and bury it. i've been like this with games since years. truly worrying. :/

edit: sorry about the double-post.

I've run out of room now though so it's kinda levelled off now though. :(

My interest in video games is starting to fade, but my skill has only improved. I fully beat mario sunshine in two days about two weeks ago and that's probably the last thing i've played other than Mario3. Maybe it's the fact I use my computer for gaming now, and I haven't even touched my xbox for awhile. I guess when you have too many games you don't feel like palying them... Bah! I'm gonna go play and beat Mario 64.
