Hey guys, i was thinking of maybe trying to learn to code a bit so i could understand and maybe even port some stuff to my handhelds, would this book be a good start?

Well, it was the first programming book I was ever given (gifted from a talented dev from the gp32 scene ;) probably to get me to stop bugging him with my silly questions all the time...), and served as a really good learning tool/reference while I worked on gp32 ports of stuf (usually other people ported and I messed it up trying to prove to myself I could atleast do small things).

It really depends what type of learner are you, and if you're going to work through the assignments in the book or just read them over and learn the syntax... In general it's a fairly nice book and doesn't overwhelm you with some of the newer concepts introduced in newer languages but instead tries to teach you the very basics. Note, C is not an Object oriented language, so you'll be missing out on learning OOP with this one, but that is something that can be worked up to and learnt from other books / the internets once you have the basics within your grasp!

You will also want to learn SDL, here is the best resource http://lazyfoo.net/SDL_tutorials/

Start small like draw some images and play some sounds. I recommend writing a few of your own trivial apps before trying to port something.

Nice, thanks guys, I think I'll order the book and give it a whirl, after that if things look good I'll look into SDL as well. I hope its easier than trying to learn Japanese :)
