The JIT compiler has gotten surprisingly good after all this time. Benchmarks put Java almost on par with native code. This isn't 1997 anymore, things are way way better.But whether native or Java, shitty code is going to run slow and bloated. I think that may be the biggest problem with Java now: it is extremely simple to write really shitty code. Every framework that solves one problem just creates another in layer upon layer of bytecode that needs to be dealt with: it may look pretty on the surface, but it's a complicated mess underneath. Use the standard libraries and it'll be comparable to stuff written in C++.If only Java ran natively as apposed to requiring a VM.... woah is me
