I've Noticed A Flaw In The Gp2x Design.

You left the GBA SP out of that list though, which is probably a smart thing for you since it's headphone jack is on the "top" too. One more system that you have to drap the wire behind the system and I hear more arguments about the funky adapter you have to use than the place ment of the wire.

It's not a mistake, a mistake would be if they did it sold a thousand units and then went "OH CRAP! We meant to put it someplace else!!" They didn't they put it right where it is because that's where they wanted to put it or at the very least it was the only place they could put it.

There are a lot of plugs and ports on it, more so than other systems so at the hardware level it was probably the best place they could put it. Also this being a multimedia player it pretty much IS the same things as an ipod there are going to be people who put MP3s on it and drop it in their pocket.

I'm with Alpha on this, and I'd like to apologize for the "imagery assault" of my previous image. I was at work, and unable to use any other program then the venerable "paint". Blast you microsoft!

Do you know what a non sequitur is?

Complaining about the design of a product does not make me ungrateful for what I have, or less sympathetic towards those who suffer. Your arguement is irrelevant, and cliched.

Alpha2: I've looked at some pictures of the PSP, and it has the same number of ports as the GP2X, but Sony still managed to to fit the headphone jack on the bottom of the unit. I'm sure the hardware in the GP2X could have been re-arranged so that the jack could fit on the bottom.

and Skate2Live, sorry but I can't allow myself to support Walmart. ;) I will probably end up buying new headphones, just from a different place.

Rather wide pockets? :) This got me thinking that it would have been cool to have 'hold' switch so you dont accidently hit the buttons, but I spose you could have certain key combination in the software, like mobile phones.

I would have prefered the earphone socket in the bottom corner, but then again the lead on my headphones is too long anyway

The PSP has a Memorystick slot, USB jack, a headphone jack and a power jack compared to the SD slot,USB,EXT,Power and Headphone. PSP is also wider allowing the MS port to be placed on the side and more outside area for the headphone jack which stranly enough people ALSO complained about even though it was on the bottom (some people feel the Headphone and power jacks are in the way on the PSP).

Rearangeing the board to fit the headphones someplace else whould have cause more delays. They're a small company you can't waste time moving things around so much when you're small and on a dead line to release the thing so you can make enough money to stay in the black.

My friend had a comic company, he was small but he was looking to get the rights to the Transformers, this was back just before the Beastwars stuff came to TV. He had to stop production on the one early book they were selling to negotiate, Hasbro kept him so busy trying to negotiate that his company ran out of money and had to go into bancruptcy because they still had opperating costs the whole time they weren't making any money.

Time=Money.

OK, now this makes sense. I never took into consideration the fact that GPH is a small company who wouldn't have the time to rearrange all the inner-circuitry before the machine was released.

I guess I wasn't looking at things from a business standpoint when I made my arguement. ;)

Since I have a beta unit and am having issue's with the headphone socket. This is what I think.

1st YES!!! It would have been better on the bottom of the unit as a games machine.
2nd It would have been better on the side, for pocket placement for mp3 playback.

But it's on the top. OH WELL!!!

What I am concerned with is the fact that i had to resolder the headphone socket because it fell out. Why did it fall out? Beacuse GPH have choosen not to make the socket flush with the case. What does this mean!!! Well if you use a headphone with a thick plug it is possible to pop the socket off the mainboard. If this is not fixed for the final unit I see alot of people with this problem.

I guess it's fair to say the issue is as much personal taste as I find the headphone placement to be fine (and the plug mounting to be very solid) on my dev-kit.

Mind you all my small in-ear headphones (the type I would use with the unit, not my big hi-fi headphones ;)) have an L shaped plug making any sort of cable routing a total non-event. Same think goes for using the PSU connection, in reality its location seems fine to me and I have to run it off the PSU all the time.

This drawing sucks, but it illustrates my point.

Just drape it down the back. Then it's not in the way of the controls or the screen and you don't have a buttload of slack. Just an idea.

Had to bring this post back up. The funniest drawing I have ever come across!! :D

a ) not a flaw, a choice. If the cable connected to the bottom, it may interfere if you wanted to stand the unit up on a flat surface.

b ) the GP2X is 8.3cm tall, which means the most your cord is shortened by is <10cm.

c ) to play comfortably at arm's length, a headphone cable needs to be ~1 metre, including the 10cm wrap around the back of the unit.

d ) I have *never* seen a pair of headphones with a cable shorter than 1 metre.

If this is the worst you have to whine about, the GP2X must be absolutely brilliant.
