hey
i was just wondering.. as you would all know there seems to be alot of competition between zodiac and gp32.
What about the HP Ipaqs... my friend has one at it rocks... is it better?

well if your talking about emulation the gp32 has many more emulators than zodiac, but the zodiac does have more power so one day the emulation scene will likely be better than the gp32. i dont know much about the ipaq but i cant imagine playing emulators on it.

I can't really say much about Ipaqs, since anything I do will be essentially speculation, but I'm fairly sure its a 400MHz machine, which implies in principal, that it would be a better machine...

It would also be a lot more expensive, and (if I remember the various posts that started to spring up prior to the Zodiac being all that known about) less nice to actually play games on layout-wise. Insofar as exactly what's available for it, though, I haven't a clue.

I have a 75MHz WinCE machine with 32MB RAM and it's a million times worse at emulation than the GP32.

Doom runs about half as slow at 75MHz on it as it does at 66MHz on the GP. The C64 and Game Boy emulators crash straight away. Plus there is the issue of software compatibility with the processor (SH3, SH4, MIPS, StrongARM etc) and with the CE version (2.0, 2.11, 3.0, 2000, .net etc).

However, it does have an x86 emulator :)

I dont think that people are using a clear head with the Zodiac. None take into account the fact that it is running a bloated buggy operating system. Sure its not windows XP, but compared to the simplicity of what is on the gp32 you know that emulation will forever suffer. And that price tag man. I realize that its a fully funk pda, what I havent figured out is what good a pda is. Lets see, I can organize my phone numbers and a calander, how ... usefull ... ? Im always amused when I see a 10yo with a pda. Well to each his own I guess. Did I mention that price tag? Crap on your uncle thats steep.

but thats still not a handheld for gaming then... i think that things like scummvm or so would be really cool on it, but action games.. no.

i saw an addon for a clie today. looked a bit like a nes controller that sort of snaps around the bottom, non screen part of the clie. looked pretty sweet but did increase its size quite a bit.

PocketPCs do, however, have good Genesis emulation. Plus something written for a 200 MHz MIPS processor will work for a 400 MHz MIPS processor and so on. So in that sense you can 'upgrade' your pocket pc (by buying a new one :D ) and get higher speeds. The GP32 is locked at 133 MHz, although perhaps that's a good thing...
