how to built other languages into Pandora

PonkP

Still Fresh
I would like to have other languages supported on Pandora such as Thai which is normally supported by maintream Linux. Midori can show Thai web page with some unalligned text, but Thunar file manager amd VLC could not. Are there any ways to fix this?

Hi experts,

I think that the default locale is en_US.ISO8859-1

A good starting point could be to switch to en_US.utf-8

I don't know where to fix that in the current OS.

In Slackware, it's in /etc/profile.d/lang.sh, which doesn't exists in Zaxxon.

Maybe try to create it, put

export LANG=en_US.utf-8
in it, then make it executable with

sudo chmod +x /etc/profile.d/lang.sh
then reboot.

I don't remember if I put it in .xinitrc or .bashrc, but in one of them, that'll make the rest of the system usable.

This might be possible with .next, as opkg is usable, so new locales could be installed.

I'd love to make our own scripts and stuff multilingual, but I don't know how the whole Linux localization system works.

I think gettext is the de-facto standard. There's also a locale env-variable that contains the current locale iirc.

And some kernel modules may help.

Native language support (NLS)

CONFIG_NLS:

The base Native Language Support. A number of filesystems

depend on it (e.g. FAT, JOLIET, NT, BEOS filesystems), as well

as the ability of some filesystems to use native languages

(NCP, SMB).

If unsure, say Y.

export LANG=us_US.utf-8

I added a similar line to .profile in my home folder, and that worked for me. Of course I was only looking to change date format. (I used 'en_GB.utf-8')

Erm... incidentally, if you are going for US english shouldn't it be en_US.utf-8?
