How Many Different Gp2x ?

I don't see all the fuss about the lack of a USB host. The USB connection was clearly not made to support external devices, it was for interconnectivity.
Sure. But I WANT to connect a mouse to it and maybe a wifi dongle, an HDD and whatever else is possible. It's a waste if that doesn't work.

I like the idea of bluetooth for keyboard/mouse when connected to a TV for pure C64 goodness.

WiFi would be excelent to stream movies/music/live tv if somone was to build a UPNP media playing client for the GP2X, i'm sre there is plenty of source available to do this. Also playing games over the internet in bed at 3am would be very cool. Also just to access ROMs from an NFS/SMB share would be awsome, so no HD nescarry if you were at home or work (with a very naive or understanding boss :))

USB host would be nice but not nescarry due to the bonus of having SDIO, its only a matter of time before drivers are written for common hardware, hell I would even pay good money for it! Whos up for setting up a reward fund for whoever gets pratical SDIO working?

Also secondary control pads would be easy to get going with an adapter on the UART

Overall i'm quite happy with the expandibility options for the GP2X B)

EDIT: @OrR, nice sig!

Why don't you just get a notebook that comes with everything you mentioned? Do you really want to carry a suitcase with HDD, mouse, keyboard, wifi dongle, and so on? A line should be drawn when it comes to determining what to include, and IMO GPH picked just enough features for retro gamers including a big LCD, enough buttons, 64MB of RAM and TV-out. Working on a console with 4MB of RAM, I can definitely appreciate 64MB space.

In other words, is it wise to buy one now? or should i wait?

Buy it, it's not expected to get signifigantly better than it is and any likely updates with be software in nature.

i don't know about him but i already do that :D
(except for the keyboard :p )
the problem is that my laptop has only 2 hours of autonomy so it's not very useful in a paris-tokyo flight for example and if you plug a joypad on it it's quite bothersome to handle (maybe with one of these cute little ultrasmall japanese fujitsu laptops or etc .... but that's not the same price  )

and the biggest thing is simply the HANDLING (normal for a handheld ;) ) a little GP32 is simply much better to use than a laptop to play so a GP2x should be twice much better ! ;)

but the GP32's biggest problem (except the joystick :p ) was the 128Mo limited memory card, (so i kept my laptop near to replace things on that card :p )
now with SDcards it's a bit better, because we can have BIG cards, but they ar more expensive than the machine itself! (in fact they're more expensive than 2 GP2x :D)

so that would be more rational to have the ability to plug something bigger on it, for example a 30Go X5L (the L means 35 hours of battery) mp3 player , wich can also be used as a self powered external HDD, for 320 bucks , still cheaper than a 4Go SDcard, no wonder why peoples want USB host ;)

remember the GP2X is promoted as a video player, and movies are not very friends with memory cards , unless you decide that there is ONE movie you'll want too see while you'll be "on the way" ;)

then for mouse, keyboard etc they all make me kinda think of office-oriented works so not very concept-compliant maybe? :D

Are you stupid? I want to connect a mouse to the GP2X! Notebooks suck. Including USB host in the GP2X should not be too difficult, hell, maybe it's even there.

^He is just stating that it would not be very portable with all of the stuff people want. I for one do want a mouse, for fps and strategy games and a few odd comp. games that require one. Also with tv-out it would be fine to use a mouse and keyboard! I also want to be able to connect a control pad for 2 player with tv out (I do have a powered usb hub) and maybe even a dance mat if someone gets stepmania ported!

I am not that interested in external hard-drives that much, at least right now. I just love my little SD cards. 1gb should be enough for me right now, and of course later on I can buy a 2gb or a 4gb and the prices will have come down a lot.

It still surprises me that no-one has ever bothered (to the best of my knowledge!) to integrate a trackball into a handheld. Something like the mini thumb trackball on the really old Toshiba Libretto's or Compaq Contura laptops. Analogue sticks, digital emulation, and those godawful "nubbins"... none of them come close to a decent trackball... stick a couple of recessed buttons on the back for your middle/index fingers and your laughing... also a damn site cheaper and more "game friendly" than a touchscreen. Imagine ST or Amiga emulation with a proper trackball... sigh....

Theres probably an incredibly good an obvious reason for it of course, I probably havent spotted it yet ;)

PS. What is this fo-toe-shop of which you speak? I'll stick to hardcore network troubleshooting thanks ;)

Probably because track balls offer up a couple of problems. Maintainance, like the old mouse balls they occasionally need cleaning, and control issues, analog is much better for a small systems. The more moving parts you have the greater the chance of something malfunctioning.

What I think would be cool is to embed something like a laptop style touchpad in the back of the unit. It would allow mouse style control without majorly altering your grip on the console, you just run your finger around the pad on the back while still being able to access all of the other controls. It also has no moving parts to worry about cleaning all of the time.

Hmmm... I think I've come up with my first hardware hack. B)
