Release Homeworld

Hi,

I just got hold of the "sold out" version of Homeworld. Installed it on to a win95 vm, patched it and then copied the required files, as listed on the repo, off to the appdata/homeworld dir.

homeworld does not run. The screen does go black for a second.

in /tmp/homeworld.out I get en error: (null) (0): Fatal error - fileSizeGet: can't fine file '/mnt/utmp/homeworld//fonts/English/'.

./homeworld.sh: line 18: 1582 Seg. fault ./homeworld

Any ideas. I'm running SuperZaxxon Beta 4 from an SD card.

p.s. rebooted to Zaxxon hotfix6 and it fails in the same way.

Hmm. Seems odd. I'm not certain, but you can try creating the folder appdata/homeworld/fonts/English

Does it get the checksums on the data files ok? (should be some lines in the homeworld.out)

BTW, I have not stopped work on this.. I am creating an SDL launcher to allow to configure the controls and select between demo/full version and some other options... it's just taking a bit of time in between other stuff.

Please please let me know if you have any control suggestions. The current control scheme is somewhat less than ideal, but it's a tricky one to figure out!

I also tried out homeworld and it also freezes up at 600 MHz. Graphics freeze, sound continues, but no response to any key.

With a higher overclock (800 MHz or 900 MHz) it crashes earlier/sooner...

It did not seem to crash when running on 400 MHz, but then the game too slow.

How can we debug this issue?

Did you patch Homeworld to version 1.05 before you copied the data over?

Hmmm, not sure. It shouldn't be crashing. What's your pnd_run output after the crash? (find it in /tmp)

Also, try upping your OPP level in cpu settings.

Yes, I patched it to 1.05 on my Vista laptop before copying the files to the Pandora Classic (see below screenshot).

I am running in SuperZaxxon 1.51.

I will try OPP3 and switch back to OPP5, to see if it correlates. When it crashes again, I will post the pnd_run.out here,

Has anyone got multiplayer working? It tells me it couldn't create a tcp/ip lan or ipx lan game. It's weird because I remember running a quake 2 server on my pandy, and my friend could see the game but couldn't connect because of wrong version. But I digress.

Hey, nice find! I'll add the patch over the weekend and give it a test.. would do sooner but it's a bit crazy here as I just moved house last weekend and evenings are all taken up with trying to get the place to look less like an earthquake just happened.

This game looks beautiful on the Pandora but it's also very difficult... I don't distinguish my ships from the stars or the asteroids... When things get complicated and the screen crowded I don't see a thing :)

I suppousse it is too much for the Pandora screen.

The game has difficult controls, different camera modes, formation controls and what not. To me this game was challenging to control even with a mouse and a full sized keyboard on a real PC back in the day. It's kind of cool we have it for the Pandora, but difficult to play on it.

I'm playing it with a mouse, of course. Sorry but games like Diablo, Starcraft or this one must be nearly impossible to play or enjoy with Pandora's nubs.

By the way, Diablo and Starcraft are perfectly playable on the Pandora. I've finished Diablo and Terran mission in Starcraft without a single problem.

Thank you Notaz for your great work!

Well Diablo and Starcraft are significantly simpler to control than Homeworld is what I'm trying to get at, those games can almost entirely be played on the mouse alone. Homeworld has several dozen keys that handle everything from camera controls to formation and setting the behavior of you ships. On top of that you are navigating in a 3D space vs just a 2D plane.

Yes, you are right. But, in this particular case, I think the screen size is also a very important factor.

I forgot, just to give feedback. I have played the first six missions of this game and have only notice minor slowdowns when there is too much on the screen. Not crashes or freezes on Pandora ghz. With max video and audio settings.

Good work!

1) need to export LIBS="-lm" to compile

2) for some reason the amd64 build wouldn't find wrong-case files/paths, though it seemed like #define FILE_CASE_INSENSITIVE_SEARCH 1 in File.h should have been set.

3) Writing to Homeworld.cfg crashes, complaining about vfprintf.c
