I already had this idea in my brain before I stumbled across this PSP Hacking howto video on YouTube. It follows the same format I've been thinking of.

There are a lot of basic questions that folks ask a lot, and I think a series of short tutorials would really help the newcomers.

So, I pose to the oldcomers, what are the topics you see addressed the most frequently?

Examples might be:
  • How to get DrMD working and set it up
  • How to get Rage2x and the Neo Geo emulator working (this is more difficult)
  • Playing videos and encoding videoes for your GP2X
  • Understanding GP2X USB -> PC connection versus SD Card Reader with Large SD Cards
A friend of mine has a digital camera that can handle 13 minutes worth of footage; a little cutting and editing later, one has a tutorial.

So, post away guys. I'm all ears. Y'all probably know I'm interested in enhancing the experience of just about anything for the common man.

Great idea, would love to see a video about Rage2x and GnGeo since this seems to be the biggest problem for newbies. USB-GP2X vs. card reader wouldn't be that bad eiher. About encoding videos I think there are enough tutorials (even with screenshots for the more unadvanced users...) and a video wouldn't help here that much. Also, everybody has another view on quality vs. video filesize so this is something you have to do on your own to fit your needs best and a video about that would probably only lead to an endless discussion about what quality setting to use... :)

Don't the readme's usually explain setting up all the emulators?

The others seem like a good idea.

Good idea David, however I wonder if video would be the best way to fo for the scripting-question. I think a detailed step by step html-with-screenshots/pictures would be better because people need to copy the script exactly.
Good luck with the video's!!!
Also when I got started with my GP2X I wanted to test emulators for the SNES but it was not really clear what the last version was and which of those emu's would be best to use. So I think we need an up-to-date website that explains in detail how you can emulate every system (also tells the diffrences between the available emulators, how good they are and which are the best).
This would greatly help newbies!

The wiki is supposed to be the place for that information but it can get out of date at times.

If most of the tutorials are going to be done on the computer, then maybe a screen capture tool would be better. E.g. Camstudio

Setting them up on the PSP has many more layers of complexity. I doubt someone stupid enough to not know how to set up an emulator would even have a GP2X. As long as there is no chance of bricking the GP2X, people should be left to figure it out themseleves (with adequate instructions). Otherwise, they would never learn and would depend on the videos for everything they do. Everything you mentioned can be explained with pictures and well-written text. Save your time.

How to resolder your headphone jack should it be broken. A video alone will soothe may new people's fears ( I just did mine. It was alot easier than i thought it'd be ).

Right, my focus is to help folks - not dream up reasons why I shouldn't bother ;)

Honestly, there is more than enough of that in this community. As y'all pointed out - the Wiki isn't up to date, and even when it is we all know it's nigh impossible to find something, and the real juice comes from reading these forums or on IRC.

I call that rather closed.

I'm not after complicated tasks that are better suited for lengthy Web-based howto's, I'm after getting new folks acclimated quickly to their GP2X. Tutorials that folks who are interested in buying one might find appealing and relaxing to their fears.

All I need here is ideas for topics, which y'all are kind enough to provide.

*laughs* Uhh, sorry, I have an Mk2 and no soldering iron.

Camstudio is a good link. Parts of many tutorials would be based on "doing something on a PC" so that helps a lot.

Brilliant idea!
Everyone has different preffered ways of learning, my gf is a teacher and explained this to me in detail... I've read a ton of tutorials on Maya, but watching one short video tutorial made everything superclear. I'd love on a video on setting up the NeoGeo emu, cause I just couldn't bring myself to go through all the readme/forum posts about it before.

Seconded - I had a quick go getting Race going and could only play Bomberman.. so I gave up as there's so many other emulators and games. (esp being an ex-Atari fan) to spend time playing around with :D (Not a lot of patience as I get older).
