first post here  , I'm from emuboards but I know there are more gp2x users here, so here i go:
(original)

I want you all to be honest, im not starting a fight here, im just pointing out the several problems that really get on my nerves and that, in my honest opinion, are far too much even for "early"(actually, several months old) adopters:

->the usb problem is common, most users have to buy a separate card reader

->many people say the joystick is too hard and slippy (its ok imo though)

->incredibly slow booting times
its the first handheld system ever to have such enormous (half a minute!) loading/boot time.
its really shocking for a system designed to pick up and play/listen to music!

->HORRIBLE SCREEN FLICKER
just have a scrolling image/action video or simple just move the screen a little and you will notice screen flicker and scanlines
the newest firmware "tries", but fails to solve it by adding some brightness/tricks.
the cpulcdtweak1.2 app helps it a lot(press B button) but it still displays a lot of scanlines on any images, the refresh rate is horrible)
just put it next to a psp, a nds, a ppc/palm or pretty much any other lcd'ed handheld and you will see what im talking about, the image gets horrible and gives you headaches
this is certainly awful for a device aimed at gaming/video playback among other things!

->poor video player
it does NOT support .mpg at all, plus it only plays a couple of .avi ones
fast forward and rewind are very imprecise and even pausing cuts a big chunk of the video, which can be a real torment many times

->random firmware incomplete/buggy stuff
the menus for travelling through files is horrible, especially when you need to go thru musics one by one! a simple left/right for pageup/pagedown would "help" this
no REAL lcd problem FIX
it allows you to run firmware updates if the battery is low. this is simply VERY immature, its a very simple problem to fix and could prevent a lot of people of having their gp2x bricked

->other stuff I cant remember now

i know some of you dont mind some of the problems, but most of them surely affect everyone, so please BE HONEST and express your feelings about thid handheld which is a dream in theory.
Share what you think:

Don't worry, they will be fixed once we create a third party firmware, someday.

thats exactly my concern
they are more interested in selling the device rather than fixing many very annoying problems
you know, you cant dump ALL of the problems into the independent programmers, the firmware for one needs to be delivered 100% working by gph, at least!
and nobody states those problems are really awful, everyone just figures it out when they actually buy and receive the gp2x
i need to warn everyone the gp2x is FAR from beeing easy and pleasant to use!

Honestly I don't really notice any problems so I can't pick any of those options. I haven't noticed a screen flicker ever on my screen, the joystick sticks sometimes but nonetheless has never caused me any grief, and I have a built in media card reader in my laptop anyways so I have never used the usb cable. Plus, the TV-OUT cable I bought worked perfectly and I have never had any issue with the current state of the emulators/games/apps. Granted I would like to see some GBA emulation come about, but I am more than happy with Squidge's SNES emu, the NKNES emu, neo geo emu, Drmd, etc. So all in all, definetely worth the purchase and I am a happy camper. :D

I might a bit of fanboy, but honestly, I don't agree with quite views of your concerns.

1. Joystick.
It's not that bad for me from the first. sorry, it seems a matter of opinion, not the problem,

2. Boot time.
It is very resonable speed (10~20sec) now with firm 1.2.1, and many (not all maybe) "lcd'ed handheld" devices need certain amount of boot time (around 10, some of them has more than 30sec of boot time), thus it is not so bad I believe. Please, try it again with newest firmware and unbiased point of view. And it is getting shorter.

3. Poor video player.
Now, I totally lost what do you mean.
I've never believed the unsupport of .mpg file means 'poor'
And all .avi files I've tested were good so far.

I assume you expect a 'Perfect movie player with top-notched LCD also has emulating ability.

4. Buggy firmware.
Again, I don't get it.
They're (GPH) lazy, and GPL theives and whatever you can call them, name it.
But still, they try to fix the bugs and the firmware is getting better.
I'm quite happy with those progresses, sorry.

Well, finally, It's your opinion that you don't like the gp2x and want people to warn, fair enough.
But I believe that warning will be enough on the 'emuboard', not here.
You don't need to enlighten us.

Sorry you don't like GP2x.

I'd call it poor when mpg was promised and so far hasn't been delivered.

IF YOU VOTE, THEN REPLY. ONLY VOTE IF YOU CAN STAND UP TO YOUR OPINION.

"Honestly I don't really notice any problems"
how come you dont notice a non-working usb port, no mpg support, horrible battery-sucker settings and the incredibly slow half-minute boot time?
... it looks like you dont really "want" to notice it, eh? :( same here, except that I failed at it

"I haven't noticed a screen flicker ever on my screen"
twist the screen around and you will certainly see the scanlines
roll it sideways, you will see its got awful refreshing rates
on drmd, compare the image of the green X still and compare it when displayed on the screen when scrolling, it gets all cracked
put it next to any other lcd screen and compare simple still images or maybe running the same (nes?) emulator
i can tell you several ways of seeing the problem more clearer

"I have a built in media card reader"
same here, its still a problem though!

"the TV-OUT cable I bought worked perfectly"
same here, im not complaining about the tv-out cable. although early versions did have problems.

"Granted I would like to see some GBA emulation come about"
yup! ^^ that would be a hell of an amazing emulator for the gp2x, eh? simply perfect, small but great games, handheld-ready :p
it will definitely come, as the dev's with the gp2x are great. im just praying for this gbax+emuholic competition to be over so we can test the new beauties :p

"I am more than happy with Squidge's SNES emu, the NKNES emu, neo geo emu, Drmd, etc."
drmd->perfect, i really enjoy it :)
mame-> impressive, very much effort put into this one and certainly deserves everyone's thumbs up :)
squidge's snes-> very nice, squidge is a very nice person and this one will definitely shine. the current version is kinda slow atm though!
nknes-> horrible, what a crappy nes emulator! nes was supposed to be perfectly emulated, at this time even pocketnes(gba) is a better choice! >`(

so you see, i enjoy many stuff in the gp2x at the moment, im just really sad such a nice device have crucial flaws(half a minute boot time, wtf?) like these listed! =`(
i bet many people agree me, and if not so, please tell me ur points of view because i really need to get this thing straight!

Booting crashes frequently.

Boot time sucks something terrible.

Lackluster fulfillment of promised features.

I love my gp2x :D

You Suck. Theres nothing wrong with it really, just a few glitches. Look at the Xbox 360 and compare that

well, i for one am ok with it, other people seem to complain so i thought it would be wise to list it too

its already half a minute, plus you gotta run cpulcdtweak1,2 everytime if you want the lcd screen really fixed(but im just counting the boot time here)

"3. Poor video player.

they declared mpg was supported and it definitely needed to be, as its a pmp(or pep as you wish).
poor? for sure! along with the fact of many of the videos beeing unsuported (most of my avis work because they were already xvid+mp3, but the overall compatibility is horrible as even .mpg doesnt work), you have the problem of the fastforward/rewind/pause functions beeing far too little precise and cut/jump huge chunks of the video.

let me quote White Demon here:

(thank you White Demon for your reply, that's the kind of honesty everyone needs)

"I assume you expect a 'Perfect movie player with top-notched LCD also has emulating ability."

that's the tapwave zodiac and I expected the gp2x to be, at least, good at videos and emulators.
all im seeing is unsupported videos and very good emulators but running on horrible screen over a system with lots of firmware bugs.
but im not really getting into details as comparing it to other devices, please lets keep the subject as the gp2x problems.

-=-

"They're (GPH) lazy, and GPL theives and whatever you can call them, name it.
But still, they try to fix the bugs and the firmware is getting better.
I'm quite happy with those progresses, sorry."

the bug fixes before 1.2.0 where incredibly shouting out loud, so of course "fixing" them was really a MUST and not actually an "extra" as you face it. those problems need to be fixed fast, and it looks like they are more worried about selling the gp2x than fixing those problems everyone know about

-=-

"Well, finally, It's your opinion that you don't like the gp2x and want people to warn, fair enough.

those problems are NOT opinions, they are FACTS.

there are many problems that already had to be solved.

a gp2x is a gp2x everywhere, wether on emuboards or here. that was a very mean reply to me as you are judging based on the forum I like the most to visit.

i'm here to help spread the word and debate about it, not flame anyone (just like you are trying to do).

please, if you are not mature enough to express your views without actually standing up to them in a civilized way, simply don't reply, as no one needs your flaming here.

Haha. None of those choices suited me really so I will have to abstain.
I have about one slight problem. Not several. Nothing really bothers me. Pros outweigh the cons loads.

Never had an issue with the USB cable. Worked fine first time.

Only noticed scanlines wen using a lighter themed menu. Doesn't bother me that much.

I timed the machine booting just to make sure and yes, 30 seconds. It's never occured to me that I should be getting all stressed out about it.

No MPEG. Couldn't give a damn. I've got a nice television, a comfy sofa and a remote control. If I wanted to watch a film I would sit down, grab snacks and enjoy it on a television. I'd rather not peer at episode 13 of lost on something the size of a credit card.

No MP3. Again, I have a portable MP3 player for when I'm out and about and a number of different ways to listen to music depnding on where I am. I have no need to carry an audible brick with me when out skating. If I'm cooking or whatever I use the stereo in the kitchen (Don't want an expensive audible brick getting food on it). If I'm at the computer I've got a nice collection of audio and a decent set of speaker to listen to it though.

With ref. the immaturity of allowing people to update firmware on low batteries:
I think there are a few thousand warnings/notices/pieces of advice that categorically state that you should only update firmware on a full charge or a mains adaptor. Honestly. Be serious. Updating firmware on a set of half cooked batteries? If some thimble-head is unable to grasp the basics of that one then they fully deserve their GP2X doorstop/paperweight.

My intent is not to flame you here, simply pointing out that a lot of the bits and pieces that annoy you (mp3, mpeg stuff) doesn't merit any consideration based on my use of the GP2X.
The console does everything I expect it to. It lets me play games and pretend that I'm some smart-ass game developer. Worth every penny.

Chimpoid

I think what mittens was trying to say is. This is a gp2x board, and guess what... WE LIKE THE GP2X. We know it has it's problems and we like it anyways. Go back to emuboards and complain there.

"Pros outweigh the cons loads."
I agree. there shouldn't be many heavy cons though.

The device MUST be able to make those operations and be GOOD at it.
(it has mp3 support, the audio player is nice imo, only the menu for listing the songs could benefit from a pageup/pagedown setting, though)

It's not because you dont use one function that it doesnt care if it doesnt work. im pretty sure you could benefit from a shorter booting time and a better screen treatment! (mainly because you PAID for it)

ah yes I have to agree with you here.
if a person tries to upate the gp2x firmware on low batteries, he/she probably deserves it to get bricked :p lmao how evil

It's only a minor firmware option I wanted to point at and make it as an example of easy-to-fix thing that GPH has not even bothered about.

now THAT's beeing honest hahaha! XD that's certainly true :p
