Gp2x Or Psp Help Me Decide Please

Theres no right choise, but yeah, if youre getting it for nothing, PSP can get you much more money back than a GP at resale :p

(by the way, homebrew isnt fully working on the higher firmwares, but the fact they have managed to clearn out the GTA stuff, it shouldnt be too long now barring any unforseen things)

If you cant tell, I both love and hate both consoles :p

personally, i would choose (and did :p) the gp2x, but that is because I enjoy this stuff. If you just want to through some stuff on your memory card and begin playing things PERFECTLY you should get the psp for now as it has had a lot more time to develop. And if you don't like it (I didn't) then sell it and buy a gp2x with the money you get.

The neo CD emulator on the gp2x has played every game I have tried on it, however, some are lacking music (even though I correctly ripped the music) and many don't run quite fullspeed (although, after overclocking to 266mhz they run just about perfect). Also, the gp2x's neocd emulator only supports backround music, no sound effects (well, not yet). I'm not sure what the psp's supports...... I'm still enjoying metal slug 1 & 2 and pulstar on my gp2x, but they're definitely not perfect.

Slightly related, theyve just got all the major bugs out of the GTA exploit, not sure if it gives them full kernel acsess but it does mean homebrew on PSP is going to last a nice bit longer.

They somehow managed to completely unload GTA from memory giving them full user-mode control over all the available memory and resources apart from flash via this Psp GTA exploit. This potentially means homebrew will be availiable on 2.01, 2.50, and 2.60 firmwares.

However, if you are mostly interested in the NeoCD emulator then this is not such an issue, if you decided to purchase a Psp, I would suggest getting one with any firmware up to maximum 2.0 since you may well wish to play commercial games in the future.

On a further note, I have just noticed a new release of the Psp NeoCD emulator to version 0.72 with one of the fixes implemented being one I personally suggested a few days ago. One of the other fixes is not something I have seen before in an emulator and is regarding copy protection.

Okay, I've pretty much decided on the PSP, and now I'd like to ask the 30 Euro question (literally). The guy at my local shop said that I couldn't run any homebrew on 2.0 or higher, and it can't be "flashed in" either (which seems fishy to me). Anyways, this guy has one PSP left with v 1.51, (or it may have been 1.2, but not any higher than that, I can't quite remember) which he said is "ready to play" but it costs 30 Euros more for the giga pack than it would at another big shopping mall, but I'm not guaranteed getting a 2.0 or lower there. He also said that once you accept the version upgrade option that the console gives you, you can't go back and change it, therefore no homebrew forevermore!!!!!! These are important issues for me, can anyone clear this up for me????? Thanks, H.G.

this isnt a PSP forum, why do people insist on talking about it. go away.

Hey dude, no harm meant at all, but mabye I did get carried away with the comparison. I am the proud owner of a GP32, and wouldn't change it for anything, I just want the best "bang" for my buck. H.G.

He's bullshitting you.
1.51 and 1.52 have to be upgraded to 2.0 to run firmware or use the downgrader (downgraders only really needed if you were wanting to do the pirate side of things though). 1.51 and 1.52 filled security holes in 1.5, but the additional features in 2.0 opened up a new one.

If you can be guarenteed a 2.0 or less one, go for it, they are all fine for homebrew. 2.01 2.5 2.6 are the ones that arent fully homebrew functional yet.

Summary :p
1.0 - Basicly no security
1.5 - easily bypassable security
1.51/1.52 - no homebrew, but can be upgraded to....
2.0 - 90% of homebrew works because of www.fanjita.org loader, you can also downgrade from 2.0 to 1.5, although theres no big reason to do it now (flashing firmware like this is always a little risky) - 2.0's and higher also have an internet web browser.
2.01/2.5/2.6 - You NEED Grand Theft Auto to run homebrew on there, currently theres only Rick Dangerous, Tetris and Pong working on it, but a loader should be here soon. These ones cant be currently downgraded.

So you definately want 2.0 or less.

Done!

Doctor is right ...

and, PSP does have better battery life (as long as you don't overclock), and can go into sleep mode (i love pausing an emulated game, and comming back to it hours later). On 1.5, the psp is pretty much drag and drop for homebrew...

My perspective since my 1st dreamcast is, i love to make consumer electronic hardware do things they weren't intended to do... my dreamcast, xbox, psp, nintendo ds, etc ... all run unsigned code, all run homebrew...

The gp2x that should be shipped to me any day now, well ... we'll see, but i think it's going to be a new addiction for myself.

Yeah, tis a massive disadvange the GP2X has against PSP there, although I'm hoping some ones more skillful than I can implament it somehow, maybe in custom firmware (like, hold L+R+A+B+X+Y for 4 seconds goes into sleep mode or something)

DON'T upgrade directly via Wi-Fi, you will go to the latest (unhacked) firmware. Download the 2.0 firmware and use that manually.

Well, but if you really ask for advice about a PSP now that you seem to have made this... decision... visit a PSP forum for PSP business and come back when you sold it ;D. And don't start crying when you visit this site in 3 months and see how things evolved ;P

sorry im just sick and tired of hearing about the fucking playstation portable. i feel like i fucking purchased one and this is a PSP forum the amount of times i fucking hear the word PSP. i dont see why people are so bloody obsessed with comparing the gp2x and the psp. ffs.

Ignore the thread then, since the OP wanted to know about the GP2xand compare to the more known PSP, what do you expect people to talk about here?

its hard to ignore a 4 page long thread on the first page of the main gp2x section.

its not just this thread either, surely you know that, and have seen the many other threads and posts comparing the 2x to the psp and stuff

Its not exactly the worst thread on here... and at least it isnt one of the 50 carbon copy bitching threads.

Anyway, its natural the two get compared since both are the main handhelds for homebrew, like it or not.

Thanks Doc, the truth is that my only goal was to compare the two so that I make an informed choice, nothing more nothing less. If, however, things got carried away, or some folks were bothered by what may have seemed to be a PSP "campaign" I apologize for that; it's just that sometimes one thing leads to another and you don't see where the thread is heading. I do have a GP32BLU (two actually, LOL) and I will restrict any further involment on this site to strictly GP32 stuff. In a "good will" effort, I will now say thanks to all of you for all the help that you have given me, and that you can "stick this thread with a fork, cuz it's done!!!!" H.G. B)

Thought that pretty much summed it up. H.G.

Maybe too many here have PSP envy, and when they hear that it has better emus like SNES and NeoGeo they get miffed. I wouldn't worry much about it. Enjoy the PSP.

I have both but I don't care for the screen stretching on PSP. I do have to admit though full speed SNES emulation including transparencies and full sound is hard to resist. I still play it at 1:1 and put up with the small screen. That is the only emu I use on the PSP though.

Eh? Did I miss a NeoGeo emulator on the PSP?

Oh wait, you mean the CD.

+1 for GP2X

The Psp has a Neo Geo Pocket emulator that reportedly runs at around 40-50 fps in alot of games, has sound support and wifi support is planned in the future. I tried this but it was avery long time ago. It also runs on firmware 2.0.
