Gp2x Or Psp Help Me Decide Please

I think the GP2X is even easier than the GP32 to get up and running. Jost copy the files onto the SD card and go, none of that "this file has to go in GPMM and this file has to go in GPETC and this one goes in GPMM/whatever".

Most of the emulators have their directory structure already set up in the .zip, .rar or what-have-you. Some do need things in specific directories though, so I would watch the readme files if I were you.

The great thing is, you can go into ANY directory from the browser to pick a program, so if you want, you can put all your programs in the root, or you can put each one in something like emulators/megadrive or whatever you want, as long as the readme doesn't contradict it.

I have both a GP2X and a Psp (firmware 2.0). As I have said in some previous forum threads before, emulation on the Psp is currently excellent. The NeoCD emulator on it is full speed, excellent sterio sound, updates are made very frequently and zip support means games load as fast as, and in some cases faster than when they were uncompressed.

I hardly use my GP2X at the moment because I have really been using my Psp to play NeoCD KOF, Snes Super Metroid (266mhz frame skip 0), Yoshis Island, Bs Zelda and Zelda Oracle Of Ages on the (near perfect GBC emulator).

My reason for purchasing a GP2X was because I was convinced the homebrew scene on the Psp was on its way out, particularly due to no break throughs in running homebrew on firmware 2.0.

I have to say, perhaps I was wrong, indeed firmware 2.0 runs approximately 80% of homebrew by using Fanjitas eboot loader or Choice via a tiff exploit, with this being improved on each time and I see a universal exploit or firmware emulation in the future being used to play commercial games alongside homebrew. Either that or a dual boot system, either way I believe homebrew will live.

Lately there have been excellent ports released on the Psp (Pang, Quake2) and although the GP2X already has a released Psx emulator for example, I have to say I am looking more forward to the one being worked on for the Psp because it will be using the 3D GPU (166mhz), the standard CPU potentially clocked at 333mhz and the programmer says he will be using a recompiler as well as alot of optimisation. It sounds like the similar architecture will also play a part in performace. There was a demo of the Psx emulator released a few days ago and I compared it to the first proof of concept and the progress in speed is, in my opinion amasing, it also runs under 2.0 firmware!!

With a Psp at firmware 2.0, you will get excellent emulation, a large library of commercial games as well as being able to play 2.5 games (using a simple trick) and not to forget the option of downgrading if needed. My advice to you is to go visit pspupdates, read the forums and then have a look at the emulators availiable under the files section. Even the GBA emulator released is pretty decent.

this is really a difficult decision.

The psp has commercial games and a great snes emulator, but its screen is terrible for emulation and you have to deal with hacks to get things working because sony doesn't want you to.

The gp2x has homebrew and a great genesis emulator. I has a great community and will definitely go far (look at the gp32, it has been around for 5 years and people still make stuff for it). However, it doesn't have big commercial games (well, so far, the psp doesn't have very many, but I think this will change....) and it doesn't have the polished feel you get from bigger name game companies.

In the end, for me, whether the psp or gp2x are better doesn't matter so much, I love to have a korean handheld that no one else has (except you guys), that has a great community online (here!), and that I can code for.

About a psp website, I would recommend http://psp-news.dcemu.co.uk/. I would advise to stay away from pspupdates due to their sketchy behavior.

Pspupdates is good becuase its generally the best updated... just dont believe anything they say that isnt clinical truths. They spout so much bull.

To be honest, wifi emulation on PSP will pretty much obliterate the 2X for me :p If it dosnt, the GP will win in the long run.

Well, with the last batch of posts I'm now leaning towards the PSP, LOL, never thought picking out a "toy" was so haaaaaaaaaaaaard,LOL. I'm going to check out the PSP boards this weekend and see what kind of "feel" I get from them. One last thing, WHATEVER console I get, I will come back to this thread and post it, so that at least you all know that your opinions and info were not given in vain and that at least I did get something, LOL. Still open to comments and more opinions, thanks to all, H.G. ;)

One point no-ones really raised, is do you still need to perform surgery on the GP2x when you get it, in regards to "Fixing" the joystick's deadzone? Also, has the sound been fixed, and the headphones problem?

I would seriously point to the GP2x in all aspects, but the idea that i'm going to purchase a system that isn't fully working, and requires "handy-man" work that's mostly out of my scope (i'm a clutch with diy and fiddly jobs, i'd end up cutting the joystick vertically in half or something), is pretty damn depressing.

If those aspects are still true, get a PSP. The complaints about the D-Pad can be resolved easily with a... (irony here) simple d-pad mod (link here), or if you don't want to open the machine, just wait for Capcom to release Streetfighter Alpha 3 or whatever it is, as it comes with a joystick cap, supposedly giving the joypad on the PSP a new lease of life (the reviewer was pulling off the various SF combos with it easily, which i heard you couldn't before)

I am not bashing the GP2x in any way, the moment i hear there's a released version that has all the bugs and glitches fixed, and the joystick has no deadzone, i'll order one. I mean right now a GP2x would solve all my problems. I'm trying to decide between an iPod, PDA that does mp3 or a PSP (that also does mp3)... the GP2x would easily slip in there, be cheaper, and allow me to play emu stuff easily too.

To be perfecly honest, both the PSP and 2X are currently crap for games. PSP because of its shit screen and GP pecause of its shit controls/unrelability.

Toss a coin, you'll be disaponted either way.

LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's really inspiring, LOL. However, the coin toss idea isn't half bad, it would save me a lot of time and you guys a lot of trouble in helping me decide, LOL, H.G. ;) P.S. Shit screen because of the resolution, dead pixels, or just shit in general???? H.G.

Theres a lot of blur on fast moving things. Its not bad on bright things like Metal Slug etc... but on dark things like Doom its horrific, blacks smudge all over the screen. If youve ever used a cheap LCD moniter for games you'll know what I mean.

Other than that though its a beautiful screen, stunning infact. Load up a slow paced game it it just looks so good - even fast paced racers look fine because any blur gives more of a "speed" feeling - but for the love of god dont try and play Medievil, I seriously nearly threw up after just 10mins of playing that because of the dark colours and speed the camera moves at, just horrible.

If the PSP would stop trying to make portable versions of PS2 games and concentrate more on handheld games it has the potential to be awsome. That turn based war game thats comming out for example (I forget its name) is perfect for it, it will look fantastic, but also be idea for on the go gaming. If you do get a PSP, for the love of god never buy an FPS for it! :p

Its all these reasons that make the DS light years ahead of the competition. Ninty have made games that are perfect for the format, and especially with the way it comes in and out of standby it couldnt be better.

For me the point of getting a GP2X is Linux. Sure, its wonderful that the HH'er crowd are making progress, but as an old-school linux guy, i just love having a portable, pocketable, hand-held linux machine in my kit, designed for playing games.

and man, it really does play games pretty well. my thumbs are sore like they haven't been in 20 years, sheesh ..

;)

Hey gang here's the dealio, I finally decided to give up my NEO GEO AES to a good buddy, and instead of selling it, we decided to swap it for a PSP (he will go out and buy one totally new). The thing is that I know that I will be using it almost exclusivly for EMUS (especially the NEO CD) so I'm wondering, if it would be better to exchange it for a GP2X instead?????? Can anyone tell me how the two stack up to eachother as far as the emus go???? I know that the PSP costs a lot more than the GP2X, but the truth is that money is not an issue for me here, I want something that I can play on, so even if it turns out to be a lot cheaper for my buddy, I don't mind exchanging my AES for a GP2X if it's better to play emus on. I realize that most folks on this site might be biased towards the GP2X, but I'm williing to run the risk, LOL. Thanks in advance for any input, Hired Gun.

Seriously don't bother with a PSP, because the hack scene is a dying scene.
Meaning GP2X is lively and will only get busier when with age.

Hmm, for a forum with obvious GP2X bias you guys put in some brilliantly balanced points :)

And I'll also have to go for the GP2X, as it has a lot more potential than it might show right now - stuff takes time to come out - and has a strong developer base behind it already. Plus you don't have to deal with anti-homebrew firmware upgrades, which may well get a lot more annoying with time (provided you buy games, that is).

hired_gun -- just get the PSP (make sure he throws in a 1 gig memstick), then if you don't like it you can sell it on eBay for enough to buy a GP2X with change left over :D

LOL, you are right, as far as the "economics" arguement goes. The GP2X goes for about 100 Euros cheaper here in Spain, (not counting the memstick) I could always try the PSP and if I don't like it sell it with the 1gig memstick (it's part of our deal) and buy a GP2X and probably have money left over!!!!! Just one more question about the bluring screen, what I'd probably be playing more than anything on the Neo CD besides Metal Slug (that point has already been answered) would be the KOF and Samurai Showdown games, would those be subject to a lot of bluring????? Thanks again gang, H.G.

Well personally I am not getting a psp because they are letting a company produce porn videos (UMD) for the psp...
