Allright, with the release of the Samba client for the GP2X this popped into my mind.

Couldn´t we use the GP2X as a Media Hub?
If we had a driver for SDIO Wifi cards, and a samba client integrated in the firmware (so we could use the MPlayer), we could hook up our GP2Xes to the TV or stereo and play media directly from our PC or maybe even a landisk (if we had a working client).

I had oa look around for suitable Wifi cards, and this caught my attention. A compact SDIO Wifi card with 1GB of storage!

Now if we only had drivers for it...

Do you think this could ever come true?

well, i allready use mine as one, over usb network.
SDIO wifi is extremely unlikely, but usb wifi sticks allready work!

Oh cool, didn´t know that. But i assume you need a breakout box for that?
Seeing as the standard USB port of the gp2x can´t be used on account of being no USB host.
And which USB Sticks do work? Surely only a handfull of chipsets are supported.

USB network isn´t really an option as it would require at least 20m of USB cable and some holes in the wall

yes you need some kind of usb adapter, either art's cable or a bob.
i dont know right now for wich chipsets there adre drivers availible, i do a quick search.

qtopia comes with a driver for zd1211 based sticks, heres a list http://zd1211.ath.cx/
it should also be pretty straight forward to port other drivers.

is it at all possible to use a wifi sd card in order to access the internet? Is it likeley that we will ever see a mini firefox or similar browser on the GP2x?

It is honestly the only downside of the gp2x.. no wireless connectivity.
