Giving the right impressions, being open-minded (split from GPD palmtop thread)

Sure, that's normal.
I guess Dingoonity users are more gamers whereas a lot of users here now are Linux fans :)

But just look at the keyboard polls :D

BTW: I used the distributor contact address from Dingoonity and already received a reply, seems to work better :)

True, and that's pretty expected, as something like Pyra is pretty niche and there are people who shoot down anything that doesn't interest them.

That said I think the Dingoonity crowd largely understands niche interests and can be respectful about this, particularly since this is only one product offering from a company that will almost certainly continue to make more conventional handhelds.

At the same time, there also seems to be a fair number of people saying that they should look to Pandora and Pyra for ideas, and that's encouraging. I hope it's taken seriously.

I reckon the Pandora had a potential sales point initially (rising to a pretty compelling one by the end of its production) of an awesome community behind it. If people don't realise the importance of that, a cheaper alternative might impact sales, but I suspect the community is a big driver behind the pandora units still being desirable whenever they come on sale, and it shouldn't be impossible to publicise that benefit ahead of the Pyra launch too.

dingoonity people mostly look down upon this community as elitist, just as this community looks down on the android users there as being blubbering idiots
Why do they think that and how can we improve that opinion? Do you have examples of dingoonity users complaining about us so I can see personally why they don't like us?

I can't find any direct quotes from their forum, but I do remember reading stuff that definitely implies that mentality, and esp while hanging out in IRC. Just like I wouldn't be able to find any direct quotes here about how "simple" the android user base is, but that mentality unarguably exists here.

So I guess you could say quotes or it didn't happen, but it exists on both sides, trust me.

This is a long reply but I think it's worth reading, it's lots of things I've felt over the years being an active member of both groups.

To improve that opinion is a two way road I believe. If there was less hate here and more interest in things other than the pandora I think you would attract more cross talk between the two communities. I've tried to casually mention it in the past, but maybe my points are too subtle, stop all the hating things that aren't the pandora.

At one point there was lots of cross over between the GCW and the pandora, because of the common linux base, but that seems to have slipped away a bit. The cross talk on pandora's android environment with the android devices there is basically non-existant. The communities both have some of the same goals, but have found different ways of doing them. So at one point the views on each other were better, but they have deteriorated over the years.

We here seem to push away any android related alternatives to accomplishing those goals for reasons I can't really understand, maybe the fear of becoming more mainstream, fear of losing customers, convincing yourself not to expand your own horizons? I don't know, I just see the problem, not the cause. Maybe it's just not interesting to this group, but it is obviously interesting to them. The fix seems to be put more of a focus on those capabilities to attract that group. But ED has stated here, it's not fiscally possible at the moment. The community would need to invest deeper into something they may not be as interested in to attract that user base (I sort of feel like a broken record with the last point)

The main thing I notice on that group is they have lots of DIY people with a focus on being lower cost. $100-200 devices are attractive to that group. To get the pandora/pyra interesting to that group, maybe a cheap single board version of the pandora. Think something like the raspberry pi running super zaxxon or something. ED cant afford making the pandora/pyra at that price point, but porting the OS to different or cheaper devices might pull in that group more. At least when it comes to contributing conversation or development.

At one point I was attempting to port super zaxxon to another device (JXD S601) but ultimately couldn't finish the port, I later tried once agian to port it to the nvidia shield but the build process seemed to get even more complicated and more links were broken than my first attempt. I also attempted to do similar things with android on the pandora, Opendingux (gcw-zero's OS) on both the pandora and nvidia shield, the shield ended up being a bad target for the exact same reason issues with the new LCD on the pyra is having issues (landscape/portrait displays). But I did try to help bridge the gaps myself quite a few times. Lack of ability on my part, and lack of interest from anyone really from helping. (although I think notaz's android environment might have been pushed into existence after he helped me a bit when I tried to resurrect a old project, maybe I spurred some of his interest or something) but I ultimately just gave up on those projects. You can ignore my sob stories, but the point being, stuff like that is what would go a long way to bridge the gap in a large way I think. That is, if you guys even want to bridge the gap, it's a number of people for sure, but I do believe it's still a smaller group of developers than we have here. It's mainly just smart users and tinkerer's that would be desirable to gain. The generic user probably is simpler and is only looking for a cheaper alternative to get the same goal done.

I think a better audience for the Pyra are the types who read the likes of Phoronix, Slashdot and Hacker News and with an interest in Open Source and/or Free Software (FOSS) and general purpose computation -- i.e. people like me -- rather than people who just want the cheapest decent emulation machine with a mainstream OS (i.e. those that, I imagine, purchase the GPD devices). I think competing for the latter market would be more difficult than serving the Pandora's under-served niche, as there are many Chinese companies with deeper pockets and cheaper labour to fend off. The Pyra would be "just another specialist Android device" rather than a Real Computer (TM) that fits in a pocket, so less exciting for people like me and likely not compellingly different for the GPD-purchasing types (it has a keyboard -- cool -- but an OS not intended for a keyboard, good battery life and lots of ports, but costs a lot more than the competition).

The main interest in Android for me (as someone never to have used it) is as a virtual machine or a compatibility layer to run some of the multitude of utility software (or shovelware) such as taxi apps and food delivery services (and perhaps those fashionable communications programs), as the trend seems to be to favour these over websites, these days. For gaming, well, personally there is a multitude of stuff on DOS, SNES, Mega Drive, PlayStation etc. that I have not yet played, so Android does not excite me. As a result, high performance is not necessarily a requirement for an Android compatibility system.

Given that the Pyra shall not use Super Zaxxon but a slightly modified Debian, and the Raspberry Pi's default OS is also a slightly modified Debian, the point of transferring the Pyra's OS to the Raspberry Pi (or a similar device) is not obvious to me. Perhaps the Pyra would be binary compatible with Raspberry Pi software (depending on hard float vs soft float etc.) -- this might be a good selling point. I know not.

but that mentality unarguably exists here.
I would argue that though. I don't believe anyone here seriously looks down on Android users. The closest I can think of to even suggesting that is when someone yet-again suggests an Android device as an alternative to the Pandora/Pyra which doesn't actually solve the problem.

If there was less hate here and more interest in things other than the pandora I think you would attract more cross talk between the two communities.
Like I said, I don't see any such hate here. I seriously have no idea what you're talking about.
As for the narrow focus, that's a matter of history. When the GP32 came out ushered in a wave of handheld open consoles. The gp32x.de forum was created to talk about all these things that were coming out. It's from that forum that the Pandora was born. This board was created to be the official forum of the Pandora, company sanctioned, official tech support, all that jazz. The gp32x forum remained as the go-to for everything else and both were fairly active. Then there was a long period where nothing really new came out, and interest started waning. Combined with the "Other" forum that was added here to discuss exactly those other things (while still maintaining this as the official Pandora forum) meant that that forum has basically seen no activity in months.
Now that the boards have been merged we're already seeing an increase of activity.
To get the pandora/pyra interesting to that group, maybe a cheap single board version of the pandora
Why? There's lots of SBCs and many more coming out all the time. The thing that makes the Pandora/Pyra interesting is the whole package. Why change it to make something that would almost necessarily be less powerful and cost more than something that already exists? If they don 't want nor see the purpose behind the Pandora, what is gained by changing to try and make them interested. If they're not interested then they aren't interested. Wouldn't it be better to suggest something that already exists? I mean, the very fact that we make such suggestions whenever someone comes looking for a "Pandora like device with keyboard/etc" contradicts your "we don't care about anything else", doesn't it?
At one point I was attempting to port super zaxxon to another device
Why would you do that though? What were you hoping to accomplish? Super Zaxxon is just Angstrom with some add-ons to handle the PND format, all the hard work Notaz put in was for the Pandora's unique hardware. And the only reason Angstrom was used was because that was all that was available at the time, really. You'd be better off with base Angstrom and only porting the little bits you needed, or even better, Debian.
stuff like that is what would go a long way to bridge the gap in a large way I think.
So in your opinion, the best way to improve our image is to make a device that no one actually needs and port an OS that has long outgrown it's usefulness? That doesn't sound right at all.

Linux users usually tend to love their freedom of choice, but often seem to have a hard time respecting other people's choices. At least from what I've gathered. Obviously doesn't apply to those who're gonna tell me it's not true (never said everyone there).

We can all try to be friends. Shoving things into faces or making demands based solely on your own interests won't help the cause, though.

OK I think I have read enough - let's all register @Dingoonity and tell those idiots we are nice and decent GNU/Linux people.
However... we might have a problem with the evil bloke..... hmmm.... maybe better to keep him here while we clean out the rats nest.

Who's with me?!

Well, Dingoonity and our boards are totally different users in my opinion.
So I think there are huge differences between both communities, but I don't see why they should fight over something.

I plan to become the german reseller for the GPD devices. I want to support a wide audience of gamers and fans :)

Usually if people fight over a device and mention one is better then the other, they are probably in the same group of devices.
The argument attracts attention, but in the end group matters.

For example: take Canon and Nikon, people have been talking about which camera is better for years but the competition isn't other brands but it's other device (like smartphones).
Same for Nintendo and Sega. When Sega went away from console-land; Nintendo didn't win, we got xbox/playstation instead. And these probably get replaced by smartphones in the end also.

So if we want to have a handheld devices we should applaud GPD for trying to create the device, even if it's similar to the Pyra.
Both will serve a similar purpose, mobile computing/gaming with keyboard.

In addition, if the GPD sells very well ED might use this money to create an even better shop/website/app-repository or Pyra.
And if he's bold he has the GPD branded, so you can still have an special ED device.

Three weeks ago a Dingoonity user posted a review of about 20 older handheld game consoles . Pandora was one of them. When it got to the Pandore, this is what he said

"I wont start a war here as Pandora owners are very defensive on those who attack their most "PERFECT" game and emulation console in the world. I will just point to some pros and cons below..."

I think the difference between with Dingoonity, is that they are very gaming centric. They are not interested in the portable PC side of things generally. You can see that in the review the user above did of the Pandora, it was all gaming centric and nothing on the handheld computer side. It's even more evident in the GPD windows handheld thread over there, were although most are in agreeance on the Keyboard addition, there are those vehemently against the concept of having a keyboard on GPD's Windows gaming handheld - could you imagine people here fighting hard for the removal of the keyboard .

I can still remember one of the threads that contemplated an Intel SOC for the Pyra. In one of the threads about it, the discussion focused on how that would lead people from Windows dev forums to come over, get windows running on it - and then this forum would be over run by, and quote "Windows assholes". The thread even talked about, if in the event that Intel SOC was chosen , we would have to create a separate forum for them, so as to keep them separate and away from us. Lets not forget how anyone who comes on this forum with any criticism or idea for improvement, are far to often(not always) shot down in flames. Makes me wonder how many people from the next generation have we turned off, and how much will that now affect future sales and the growth of this community.

On a separate note, those asking about the battery capacity, the current GPD XD has a 6000mAh battery, It's a fair chance their Windows handheld will have the same battery which is the capacity the Pyra will have.

Because every time somebody does this, they criticize it for not being a smartphone, not running android, and all the other things that every other device on the market does.

it's not isolated to when someone presents an android device as an alternative, although people are quick to comment in those threads also about how uninteresting those things are on top of it not meeting their needs. But really any android device, whenever mentioned or topic'ed has it's normal fellowship of people openly disregarding it as a clone or just plainly crap (there has been a shit-ton of these topics I'm referencing). There is some helpful conversations in them sure, but alongside overwhelming negative feedback, not exactly what I would call welcoming. The topics that spur the "android users are idiots" are deeper in the forums and topics and usually arise when the subject of bringing it to the pyra, or when it used to be brought up with the pandora. Some conversations I remember you personally posting in, although I don't remember you specifically posting any negativity, but to say you don't see it or remember seeing them makes me think you're either being selective about your memory or bias has taken over. ED seems to know what I'm referencing as I'm sure others do as well. Either way, it's a general vibe rather than specific instances. Conversation that usually devolve into an "us" vs "them" situation.

As for the narrow focus, that's a matter of history.........
no need for the history lesson, I've been here for the better portion of a decade as well. The rift between this community and that community was the point, and I was asked how we can improve the opinion of each has on each other, my answer was to help bridge the gap between the two by being more open minded to other people's needs. You want to justify the rift, then that's cool, but I was giving an answer to your question with my own justification why something should be changed to help that.

Why? There's lots of SBCs and many more coming out all the time. The thing that makes the Pandora/Pyra interesting is the whole package. Why change it to make something that would almost necessarily be less powerful and cost more than something that already exists? I was presenting an idea that would appeal to the cheap ass DIY guys in that forum to get them interested in the pandora's ecosystem. If that's a bad idea, then it's a bad idea. I felt the pandora has things to offer in it's simple application packaging and existing catalog that could be appealing to other handhelds and low profile computers. Having a cheap device that can do lots of stuff the pandora can do (in software) mostly out of the box would be appealing to some I think. Especially the group that finds android devices as alternatives to the pandora, a group that might not need a keyboard, but respects the other benefits of having linux handheld gaming device over an android only based one. Some points might be less latency in emulators which is a common complaint.

Why would you do that though? What were you hoping to accomplish? Super Zaxxon is just Angstrom with some add-ons to handle the PND format, all the hard work Notaz put in was for the Pandora's unique hardware. And the only reason Angstrom was used was because that was all that was available at the time, really. kind of the same answer as above. The point being no bridge gaps exist currently, it's not like angstrom, debian, opendingux, android, or windows is isolated to very specific devices by some underlying magic. Porting the OS to another device would just potentially add to the user experiences and give people more options on what they want and could run. Plus getting devices to run things they weren't intended to do out of the box is just good ol fun. The experience of doing and supporting it builds communities. That's where most of us come from I think. And if it weren't for that underlying urge to make your device do cool things it normally wouldn't, I don't think this entire internet subculture would even exist. I started my adventure in this subculture running custom firmware on a PSP for example.

So in your opinion, the best way to improve our image is to make a device that no one actually needs and port an OS that has long outgrown it's usefulness? That doesn't sound right at all.
yea, I mean if you want to make my idea look stupid then sure.

But the intent was a way to make your perceived image better by being more welcoming to needs outside your own. People who want some of the same stuff you guys have and can't or not willing to shell out as much money for it. This is one of the best places on the net to come to if you want a pocket emulator or a true pocket pc. But their needs might not be exactly what the pandora/pyra has to offer in it's full glory or at least at it's price, but maybe more than what the android devices have to offer out of the box, and could be happy with something in between if such a thing existed. And again, that cheap ass that doesn't want to shell out more than the $100-200 for their toys.

If you allow yourself to imagine for a second if there was a user grown package to get one of these android game devices to run pandora's angstrom package, and lets just be optimistic for the sake of argument and say it was generally binary capable without modification with the existing catalog. And lets say someone came up with an on screen keyboard that was controller navigable like the GCW zero has. Ok, still with me?

What does that give you? A $100ish dollar pandora that can run most of the same applications the pandora can run at around the same level of performance. You see absolutely no merit if something like this existed? You don't think it would atrract anyone to this community to either add additional software or inspiring developers? It wouldn't get what developers love, and their application out so more people can enjoy their labors?

far fetched maybe, but I really think something of that nature would be a net positive to all parties invovled, and that's why I was trying to do it. But agian, it might just be as stupid as you make it sound.

Well yeah, obviously. I'm in the machine, I may be able to change it but I can't see it. That's why I asked for examples.
no need for the history lesson, I've been here for the better portion of a decade as well.
Right, sorry. Getting carried away.
get them interested in the pandora's ecosystem.
That's what confuses me about what you're saying though: why do we want to get them interested in the Pandora at all? If they don't want it then they don't, and that's fine. The Pandora isn't for everyone, it has a lot of very niche features and if they don't need this particular set of features then we'll gladly help suggest another device that does have just the features they want. There's no need to change. I could make a counter argument by suggesting the Dingoo could bridge the gap as well by coming out with a keyboard modification: I wouldn't actually want that because it wouldn't actually add anything. The Dingoo is perfect at what it does, it fits its own niche perfectly.
I don't care if they don't like the Pandora, it bothers me that they hate us and I don't even know why.

So in one hand we have the status quo, no change to the general mentality of this community is for the pandora, and theirs is for basically everything else gaming handheld related. And if that's the intent, then that's fine. Everything that's not the pandora gets it's only little comment section and gets nitpicked to hell for not being the pandora basically. (overly simplified) Some cool things retro gaming get mentioned and liked, and that's generally it.

but if you stop, that's specifically why they look down upon this group.

how do you change just that? You got me... no idea on that one, opinions are like assholes, and everyone feels like sharing it regardless of how nasty it is.

On the other hand, people authentically like the pandora for it's features and benefits, or at least what they hear about it, but there is a very real group that feels it's too expensive. They might dismiss it as an option for them for reasons other than them being cheap asses, but I think it really comes down to that though. Like if a magical economic fairy were to bring it back to or below it's original $300 price point, and turn the clock back to 2009 or scale back the price of aging technology they might still be interested in it enough to buy it. But none of that is going to happen, so the next best thing in my mind would be to bring what it has to offer to something they can and will purchase.

If they could see first hand what it has to offer in something they have already or could afford, then I feel their opinions would change drastically about what this community is all about and in turn would not only improve the existing ecosystem, but may even get them to see the merits enough to make that purchase of the real deal, maybe not.

But for right now, just like I look at someone driving a jaguar, I'm full of resentment on something I can't afford, and immediately classify them as snobbish assholes without even meeting them. But if I were to test drive a jaguar myself, or maybe just get a cheap mod for my current piece of shit car (my car really isn't so bad) so it looks and drives like a jaguar, I might just change my mind about them a tad bit.

about bridge gapping the dingoo with a keyboard, it wouldn't mean as much if the software on the pandora didn't come with it. That is the true gain to be had, hell just porting angstrom to the dingoo would give them if nothing else a PC esque desktop they currently don't have, not to mention the vast library of applications. (it's a bad example though because of the mips architecture, arm->arm would be infinitely better)

Well, yes, but no. This is the Pandora/Pyra forum, that's the focus, always will be, I don't see any reason to change that. You don't go to, I dunno, a Legend Of Zelda fan forum and complain that they don't talk about Mario enough, to extreme an example.
But that's not all we talk about. When a new thing is released, we talk about it. When someone asks, we recommend things. This very thread that we're currently posting in was started to talk about GPD's upcoming x86 pocket PC, with generally positive thoughts and well wishes. How can you say what you're saying in a thread that pretty much directly contradicts everything that you're saying?

If that zelda fan forum had a section dedicated to characters from other games you would assume there wouldn't be a bunch of posts about how much mario sucked every single time he's mentioned.

I wouldn't normally do this, but I felt I had to prove at least one of the points I'm making, and hopefully you'll trust me on the other one. I'm not going to go sifting though to find the ones about how android users are generally idiots, I think it would take too long to find some of the posts I'm talking about. I did have to go back quite a bit in time for these and found most of the threads about actual devices in this section (the frequency of new devices despite them seeming to come out every other month) and through all the talk about niche game things or game titles which take up most of this section's real estate. Looking at the first page of most of the threads paints the picture, and some take going in a page or two before you see the general shift towards negativity, if your paying attention you'll see them very clearly.

It's not just about having opinions that aren't positive, or discussing devices, but mainly about how those negative opinions are presented I guess. Not only are there tons of negative viewpoints, but rarely are those negative viewpoints constructive. It may seem as if I'm nitpicking the bad, but it just seems overly negative.

This thread does seem to be an exception though, and mainly why I wanted to point these others out. I'm actually rather surprised that this device has potential to be embraced rather than shunned given our history.

I have nothing against some enterprising person trying to get Windows 10 to run on an x86_64 Pyra (except for the fact that Microsoft may get money from it in the long term and that otherwise innocent people might then get snooped upon by the said company while using their Pyra) -- in fact, I am mildly in favour (assuming practicality) of an x86_64 Pyra so that I could run software in WINE at full speed. I would, however, vastly prefer work towards GNU/Linux, which is still under-represented in consumer markets. Plus, if Windows and/or Android became popular enough on the Pyra, then EvilDragon would have cause to spend time and/or money on improving them, which would not then be used for GNU/Linux. So, it can harm me, in effect. Besides, if people like me said nothing, then all you would have are messages from people asking for Android and/or Windows and the market would follow. In history, the meek tend to lose.
But you're just getting "defensive" for no reason. The Pyra is primarily a Linux machine, ED has even mentioned Android being a possible "secondary" option. If ED turned around and said "It's now Android", I would imagine a large portion of his user-base would be mightily upset and potentially ruin the Pyra's sales. So feeling the need to defend something that's so unlikely you're almost able to say it's impossible just sounds like you're against the other options.

How many pocket PCs? Well, aside from the Pyra and Pandora, the new GPD device, of course! :p
And that's about your choice, and the GPD doesn't have a keyboard. All the old CE devices are no longer manufactured and more than likely unsupported

Of course, there is also a moral imperative to take the easier steps to protect the ignorant* from system malware (as Windows 10 and some Android distributions could fairly be described). :p

*"Ignorant" includes any that cannot install their own operating system, I think. Note that, for smartphones, or any other ARM device without a BIOS etc., I am "ignorant".
So you hate Microsoft for intrusive checking of their computer and automatic updates that will potentially keep them safe (despite what else they may do), but you want to "protect" those users by restricting their choice of OS to something they potentially don't want?

Interesting thought...
