It's time I entered the 16-bit gaming world of consoles! After years of just having an NES, I decided to bring the notch up a bit ;)

I ordered the first-gen Genesis, two controllers, and the games Rocket Knight Adventures (bloody awesome game), Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, and Sonic 1. More will come once my wallet's filled again, and I'm definitely looking forward to it.

Hurrah!

Edit: Spelling

I <3 my MD. Nothing like them saturday mornin's of old, getting up at 6, playing sonic 2 till midday, getting to the last boss, and having my little sis come in and bang on the console frezzing it. Nooooooooo!

Are there any other worthy games I should pick up? I've seen many thousands of lists all with about 10-20 games in each list... Just give me one nice, good, solid game for the MD/Gen. One thing, I think, made the MD suffer at the hands of the SNES was the lack of truely good titles. It's sad because it's a really nice peice of hardware, especially for its time.

What generes do you like? I'm sure people will chime in anyway, but it's best to know if you want puzzle, sport, platform, RPG, etc.

You NEED Gunstar Heroes. Everything else is optional.

Other games I liked were:
Starflight
Phantasy Star IV
Streets of Rage 1-3
Shadowrun
General Chaos is good the first couple of times
Desert/Jungle Strike
Vectorman

I'm sure there's a ton I'm forgetting here. A lot of people swear by the Sonic games, I think they're alright but there are better games out there.

Well, I enjoy a good platformer, side-scrolling, cartoony, adventurous game, hence, Sonic and RKA. I'm definitely not into RPGs, but I would love a good shooter.

Unfortunately, I probablly can't help you much, then.

Though, just for the record, I think that my favs are the NHL series (FIFA is good too), and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. If you'd like a good 2-player puzzle game, look at Mean Bean Machine. It's just Puyo Puyo with Sonic art.

I just played Gunstar Heroes, and... WOW. I forgot how good that game was. A definite must.

Virtua Racing. In these post Gran Turismo Days it may not look so hot but the Mega Drive version of this was very good, but it was bizarre that the Medium difficulty was harder than expert and beginner mode.

Flashback was also good, as was Theme Park, and Gauntlet IV and Wiz and Liz are excellent multiplayer games. Road Rash is also good fun.

Thunderforce 3 & 4 are top notch shoot em ups.
Sonic and Knuckles
Wiz and Liz
Some of the Mickey mouse platform games are great too, So i`ve heard.

Trooper

Mickey Mania - The Timeless Adventures of Mickey Mouse

I kid you not; it's an excellent game.
I have to agree

The Cannon Fodder port is pretty good too

I'm glad that folks are giving good suggestions. Thanks a bunch! I'll have to try them out... one at a time.

Herzog Zwei - my favorite game of all time. it's a real-time strategy game but very arcade-style shootery. you'll probably hate it at first, but if you put some time in with it you might love it.

old, old.. revenge of shinobi, and shinobi 3 - yeah, pretty old but so much fun. they never made many games with that kind of polish..

columns 2 is extremely dated but can be very fun with 2 people

shooters - MUSHA is an excellent vertical shooter. it's still very fun and hectic to play today.

ghouls n ghosts, the first game i ever got, is actually still a lot of fun too! and a lot of people still enjoy strider. no doubt these can both be found for dirt cheap.

shooters - i liked whip rush, gaiares, and of course the Thunderforce games..

if you don't like RPGs but still liked the old Zelda games you could try Landstalker.

damn, i want to play some Genesis now! good old days..

Ghosts and Ghouls

A lot of good games have been mentioned here. The first game I got for the Genesis was Hellfire. Good little shooter. Grind Stormer is good. Nothing beats out Thunder Force 4 on the Genesis.

I'll second Alladin, it is an awesome platformer, much better than the SNES version. Also, Micky Mouse and the Castle of Illusion is very good believe it or not. But i find myself playing the sonic games most of all.

Oh and if you ever plan to get the Sega CD and love shooters, I highly recommend Silpheed.

If you haven't got six button controllers then don't bother with UMK3.

I actually find it a lot easier to pull sweet combos on the three button controller. It's not that hard to press two buttons at once, you know ;) Anyway, I'm so used to punch+block equalling high punch that I probably wouldn't know how to use a 6 button controller. Plus, It makes sure that you know your shit to be able to throw down effectively with Ermac, Reptile, Noob, Sub Zero, Kano, basically everyone.
