In the real world, in the eyes of the law - all roms which you do not own on a cart, no matter how old is copyright theft. Period.
Everyone fails to mention of course, that you can still buy plenty of Game Boy (old gameboy) games and consoles in stores. This is not an obsolete console, nor do many treat it as such.
so what about the ppl who download the music they already have copies of, or films the same.
I think there is a big difference between downloading a few roms for a games system that was released over 10 years ago and one that has only been out for a couple of years, yes the original gameboy is likely still avilable in second hand shops, in places but you seem to be focusing your energies on a system that is currently available, curiosity or not, you mention linker carts and other gba accessories to play homebrew and pirated games on, you have your solution to your problem there, buy those items and play homebrew stuff on the move.
WE all want to keep the system from being noticed by nintendo and their collection of lawyers, who would likely be able to kill off the handheld easily if they put their mind to do so, as has been mentioned by other more regular and experienced ppl than me, we tend to keep quite on gba emulation for reasons stated in replies above
you mention copyright, not many ppl realise that you only pay for the right to listen to a piece of music or to watch a film or play a game and the only thing you actually own is the materials that make up the package and the media it comes on.
How ever you try going into a shop and asking to exchange an old vinyl album for new cd version, or old video cassette for new dvd you would get laughed out of the shop, so I payed to use games from old systems, I gave the company my money, for their entertainment product, so now I will download in a format that allows me to use in a new way.
