Free Rice

If my cynical wankerism makes people look at the whole subject from a different angle, it has fulfilled its purpose. So many people have good intentions, but are unable to understand what's wrong.

Edit:

What kind of charity are we talking about? Because if your idea of charity is feeding people, you are wrong. This kind of charity indeed causes enormous problems.

It has sustained totalitarian regimes which would most likely have collapsed otherwise. And still is.

It is causing the aforementioned economical problems.

It prolonged the Eritrean-Ethiopian war by about 8 years.

It contributes to the already gross overpopulation that is one of the main causes of hunger, thus only intensifying the problem.

What morality is there in saving a child from starvation, just so it can live a miserable life, maybe have its genitals mutilated if it's a girl and eventually sire or conceive ten other starving chidren?

Think about that before you call me cynic, Oh Donator of 200g of free rice.
There are other forces at work besides our throwing rice at them. If we simply left them alone, people would still die in huge numbers, totalitarian regimes would still exist, and economic problems would still arise. The difference would be that more people would be starving. Your final point I find abhorrent. We should allow people to die merely because we think their quality of life will be poor? That shows very little consideration for the people themselves, who for the most part don't want to die starving, no matter how horrible their lives may be.

Which brings me to one particular - although not necessary - detrimental effect of charity, which is complacency. It is conceivable that people will believe that the mere donation of money and resources will solve all the problems in the world and therefore will not try to actually produce solutions. The situation is more complex than just a lack of food and clothes and water and it is important to understand that - but while we are fixing these problems for the long term I see no harm in trying to keep people alive for the short.

I agree, but I'm pretty sure, that many people just donate to feel better instead of going further and trying to solve the problems. I suggest, that everyone who is interested to help, reads the United Nations link I posted above. You can't treat the poor as second class humans. Help to let them help themselves. The whole social and economical situation is modern slavery in a global dimension. First understand and then help.

Build a man a fire, and he's warm for a night....

Set a man on fire, and he's warm for the rest of his life.

I agree that if everyone just keeps donating food/money it isn't going to solve any probelms for good, but a lot of people don't have the time or funds to be a majour part in making long term changes. And I can't remember who said it, but they were right, people don't want to starve to death.

Every click giving them seeds for a cash crop would make so much more sense.

Also, what proof do we have that this is not an ad-click farm? :p

haha oh wow

also whats with this geocities site you are linking to?
btw what does using FREERICE.COM have to do with me not having an education or being 'ignorant'? I think it has more to do with you being paranoid and even more complacent than anyone who screwed about on free rice

I don't want to continue this fight :) Maybe someday, when you are in a better mood, try informing yourself about world economy and the impact on local social structures. You may notice, that there is enough food on this earth for everyone. There is just something wrong with it's allocation. Actually it is very likely, that the rice you click for is produced in a country, where people starve to death too. Nowadays food is traded like every other good in stock markets. We buy cheap food from third world countries and feed our swine with it or burn it in stoves. There is a multitude of things you can do about it. But you have to get active. Clicking for free rice(I searched on the UN site for free rice and didn't find anything) is just not active enough, if you ask me. Now you will say but it is at least something and then I will say, no it isn't.

Edit:
There is also a situation the other way around. For example tomato farmers in South Africa are becoming bankrup because of cheaper imported tomatos from Europe. The reason for the tomatos being cheaper is, that the European farmers get subventions from their governments. Now, if the tomato prices increase, the local famers will have given up their farms and the people will have to buy expensive imported tomatos. The United Nations initiatives for local development address those problems directly. Personally I think, that joining forces and getting politically active is much more effective than doing scattershots.

Last but not least, if free rice gives the rice to poor people to let them survive, it's a great thing. But thinking about the background that leads to the starving of those people, it looks like the system that exploits those people just gives them back some breadkrumbs and says "Look here, we do something against poverty". When I view the whole picture from outside it looks kind of like the bitterest irony I've seen in my life, so far.

So, I closed the thread due to the insults and name calling, you asked for it be opened again, and this is the result, only one useful post from mali, and crap for the rest.

Thanks for telling me that reopening it was the correct way of going guys.
