Free Rice

So the point of this is to donate food to extremely poor countries (e.g. African countries) thereby drastically decreasing the cost-effectiveness of local farms and increasing the dependance on foreign help. Well done.

By the way, whenever there was a famine in Europe, the population decreased.

You should do your homework ;) If our oh so glorious western culture would just stop sending food, clothes and those other crap we wastefully produce, those poor countries would already be able to stand on their own feet. It's us and "free rice" what keeps them down.

You folks could try adding the other side of the equation in to the picture: if they didn't grow for export there'd be plenty of food to go around. Like in ethiopia in the 80's when they farmed peanuts for the west while people were starving.

There is no shortage of food, but of money in the populations pocket. Thus, they cannot buy food and starve. Sending free food will never resolve this problem.

Who's fixing anything?

I think FEEDing starving people is the answer.

I COULD use the argument that atleast a few people will live a little longer, and thats pretty good for a few mous clicks if u ask me.

But, nah. I won't. You're obviously the authority on such subjects and know the entire solution so well as to be able to sum up the entire problem in a few short sentaces. Giving food to people is evil.

I don't think any poor African farmer is going to see this and say "Don't worry guys, there's no need to work! The Westerners will supply us with free rice from their internet games!"

The idea that charity is somehow causing problems in developing countries is absurd. Whether it solves them or not is a different matter.

Agreed, starvation in any country needs to be there before charity comes in.

The website is clearly not trying to solve the original problems, but responding to urgent needs. Try imagine being in that situation where through no fault of your own you cannot feed your family or yourself. For the sake of a few mouse clicks and a reasonably entertaining quiz, what's the f**king harm?

A lot of heartfelt compassion for one sataniC Virus from Hell. =D

But I have to agree, there's no harm feeding starving people. Perhaps living on charity is keeping them from creating an uprising that would bring about some positive change. On the other hand, most of the uprisings that occur on the continent are just as corrupt as the governments they are trying to displace (at least, it seems that way to me). I suppose one of you critics, having already expressed your rather callous opinion, already has a comprehensive plan that enables the people to feed themselves... before they starve.

Maybe I'm a little too cynical for this kind of discussion. It's like to pet your sheep for a while before you finally kill it. It's like pulling every second child off the street instead of stopping the amok driver who is about to kill the rest in the next few minutes.
These examples are very black and white, I know that. Helping people is a must. But not stopping the original reason for their misery at the same time is naive and asshole-ish. You click around on such a fucking stupid website and then you feel like Jesus and continue to stuff your burgers into your head.
Do a little research on "cash crop", that's at least a starting point(Btw, this is something so basic, you usually learn at school, at least I did).

Btw. I you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen, this is the internets.

Should just let them all starve to death! Or.. start businesses located in those problem areas, employing the people, giving them money to buy food n stuff.

We Westerners have a habit of coming along, starting businesses in developing countries and becoming exceedingly rich whilst the people who are employed by the business are paid barely anything at all and work under awful conditions, just because there's nowhere else to go.

Yes, you are too cynical. So much so that it seems to obscure your sense of EMPATHY.

"But not stopping the original reason for their misery at the same time is naive and asshole-ish".

That's a ridiculous statement you pretentious fool. IF you don't stop the problem then you are a naive asshole is what you are saying here, to take your argument to its logical extreme. Is it selfish - yes, slightly. If you're not doing anything, by some moral argument, you actually should - can;t argue with that one bit! I'd be an asshole If I condoned the situation where people would starving, THAT would make me an asshole, or if i professed not to care - but I dont. If I said that everything was A-ok and "c'est la vie", or that all problems could be fixed by giving them some food, that would be naive.

But Im not.

"You click around on such a fucking stupid website and then you feel like Jesus and continue to stuff your burgers into your head.".

That's a nice, completely unfounded assertion. Wow. You said some stuff that may or may not be true. Anyone can do that. Adding random rhetoric to an argument doesnt do anything to support it. IT was also kinda harsh since All I'm trying to do is show people a website that I thought was cool.

"Do a little research on "cash crop", that's at least a starting point(Btw, this is something so basic, you usually learn at school, at least I did).".

Will do. The bit in brackets was again, random rhetoric just to be a wanker.

"Helping people is a must".

And at a time when I have free internet access, but not a lot of free time, or money, this is the easiest way for me to help people, at least in the short term since we have yet to revolutionise the planet into some utopia.

What kind of charity are we talking about? Because if your idea of charity is feeding people, you are wrong. This kind of charity indeed causes enormous problems.

It has sustained totalitarian regimes which would most likely have collapsed otherwise. And still is.

It is causing the aforementioned economical problems.

It prolonged the Eritrean-Ethiopian war by about 8 years.

It contributes to the already gross overpopulation that is one of the main causes of hunger, thus only intensifying the problem.

What morality is there in saving a child from starvation, just so it can live a miserable life, maybe have its genitals mutilated if it's a girl and eventually sire or conceive ten other starving chidren?

Think about that before you call me cynic, Oh Donator of 200g of free rice.

If you want to feed starving people: play the game.
If you feel it does more harm than good: don't play the game.
