Final Frontier Trader is a 2D single player space strategy, combat, and trading game. You pilot a starship which is upgradable. You can buy, sell, or trade parts and even new starships. You can even join a fleet for experience in missions and combat.

I was looking for a strategy game and found this. Source code is available (Win32, Mac OS X, and Linux portable, and possibly other systems)

this looks nice. If somebody cared to port this, I would be quite happy. But what about the library physfs? Wouldn't that be an obstacle to porting?

EDIT: Gosh... if anyone ever complains about the gp2x scene being rude to newcomers and developers, they should take a look at the gametome entry for this project and read the comments. People there seem to be as stupid, as they are arrogant. Amazing how ignorant and rude people can be. They demand feature as if they were paying the devs for this, they rant and insult. If I was a developer of the project I would drop it instantly as it seems like the work is not at all appreciated.

you can play the atari-ST version of Frontier: Elite 2 on the gp2x via outcaST.
I was a bit surprised when I found it - I thought it was PC and Amiga only, but there it is.

Can you indeed?.... I may be leaving work early (even though it's already later... damn)

Yeah, it was Commodore, Amiga CD, Atari ST, PC... and maybe some others.
Amazing game

Cheers

Wow, Frontier: Elite 2 looks awesome. I'd assume this is abandonware by now... Anyone have a download link? Edit: for the Atari-ST version. The PC and Amiga ones are easy enough to find.

Lost the links now, but it is most definitely _not_ abandonware.

I was involved with a group that wanted to redevelop it and extend it in to a third version (no one counts First Encounters as a part of the Elite series :p ), but David Braben specifically refused because he still intends to make a fourth (or so he says).

Shareware version (of Frontier) available here: http://www.eliteclub.co.uk/

Edit: Found the link: http://www.frontier.co.uk/

Yup. Came across those in my stumbles. Amazing that something that old is still semi-supported. I'll have to try the DOS version out when I get home. Sounds like a lot of fun.

aha. it is :)

quite a good'n on DOS (and I realise we're getting further away from the original thread here!) is the ffe mod called JJFFE, which is a mod of another mod(!) Its basically 'Frontier: First Encounters' hacked to run properly in windows, and with various ship stats etc tweaked for more balanced gameplay. it kicks @ss.

I'm not going to attempt to port it - if I port one more thing beginning with the letter F I'll explode.
damn. there go my hopes of a 'Final Fantasy X' port. lol ;)

Oh my god Frontier in the Atari ST looks amazing! I'm so gonna try it when I get home tonight. I've been looking for an involving space shooter/trader for ages, since I played Privateer 2 about 6 years ago, and never found something quite as good. If Frontier plays as nice as it looks, then my college grades are in serious danger :D

Damn, I got home all excited about playing Frontier on OutcaST, but when I installed it on the GP2X and started playing I was really disappointed. The game runs way too slow to be playable (something around 3-4 FPS), but it was said that this emulator runs full speed with sound? I didn't hear any sound either... So am I doing something wrong, or is this really how it is?
