1. On the pandora wiki page I seen the pandora-psp emulator just wondering if this is being developed and any progress being made?

2. I know about VLC player and Mplayer what video formats do these play?

3. I know the first batch hasnt even been delivered but are more of these going into production after?

4. On the firefox that has been ported will I be able to watch videos off the net with it or is there no flash support?

Thanks for any replys. Just found this device. Looks amazing and could replace my archos 605 and psp. XD

As far as Mplayer goes, it should play .avi files, though I could be wrong.

2. Pretty much every format out there. ffmpeg is at the core of these and supports everything.
3. You can bet on it. The OpenPandora team are going to try to make a solid business out of this device.
4. There is no flash support at the moment, but there are some open source flash players out there so it may be possible in the future.

1. Strictly experimental, don't expect it to play commercial games for a long time if ever.

2. Pretty much anything I can think of

3. Yes

4. Unless the rumoured port from Adobe ever comes flash support will likely be reliant on a port of GNASH or similar, so buggy at best. Though <video> should be fully implemented by the time the pandora comes out.

So not much hope for the psp emulator no? :(

And what sort of timeframe are we looking at for the second batch?

Just how buggy is GNASH? I mean are videos almost unwatchable using it?

I'm inexperienced with Linux and I'm just wondering what sort of interface and desktop Linux has?

Thanks again

Well I certainly wouldn't buy a pandora assuming it will happen. Of course I'd love to be surprised.

Since we have no idea when the first batch is arriving you may as well play pin the tail on the donkey with a calendar.

GNASH can just about play youtube last time I tried it, not much else worked, other people's experience may differ.

I wouldn't be worried by linux, if all you're doing is playing games and playing movies then it should be a drag and drop, point and click affair. There are a couple of youtube vids of the custom interface from ages ago if you want to make sure

You won't have to use desktop Linux if you don't want to, there are alternatives to that. However, if you do use it you'll find it's a bit like Windows, if you're used to that. Of course it's Linux, so it's not comparable to Windows in every way, but the devs do want it to be as easy to use as possible for beginners, but still advanced for the more technical crowd. And while there are many prospects for Flash on ARM/Linux in the works, don't expect it to be much useful for more than watching Youtube or something for a while.

Thought I'd add my quick question since a thread was open anyway.
Will we be able to Telnet/SSH out of the box, or will an app need to be ported?

As Tensuke mentioned, a typical desktop linux setup (usually either KDE or GNOME) is fairly similar to windows and quite user friendly. Though there are many, many, many different linux desktops available. The Pandora will use a window manager called matchbox by default, which is designed with mobile devices in mind with a simple icon-based menu and applications all in fullscreen. Evildragon posted a few videos a while ago showing what it's like, though they're not with final software (or hardware).

The final software should be pretty similar to these videos, though I believe there won't be a taskbar (instead using the menu key to return to the main menu).
Or you could use any other window manager you want (though the desktop-oriented ones probably won't translate well to the tiny screen).

Additionally, it doesn't have to be a desktop-style environment at all. The GP2X used gmenu2x, which is just a graphical menu running on top of Linux:

As simple to use as a mobile phone. ;)

There are two similar menu alternatives being worked on for Pandora. You'll be able to use these instead of the Matchbox desktop if you prefer:
