Don't Use Lacie 2.5" Usb Hard Disk Drives With A Pandora

Regarding the original problem that the drives tries to take too much juice is more related to the HDD than the controller, I'm pretty sure.

Might be, but the drive and the controller might be a factor. The bridge boards are physically different, they might have different power draws, no way to tell. USB 2.0 powered them both so they were both under 5V or whatever the limitation of USB 2.0 power is.

I have a Verbatim 250GB Model #47580 and that worked an absolute treat when plugged into the Pandora.
Watched videos directly from it at full speed, no need for powered USB hub.
Had issues playing roms directly off it however as it was formatted NTFS. I'm sure if I formatted to FAT32 these would disappear.

Noticed from the replay above that there is a USB supported list. Would some please let me know where that is so I can upload my own results for various gadgets.

I added both of these reviews to the wiki article. I'm not sure what to put for "Connector" and the "Suggested connection to Pandora" columns, though. Did you use a "standard-A port via powered High Speed Hub"? Or did you just connect the HDs directly to the Pandora?

I don't understand the USB terminology, so maybe someone could fix it up for me...

So if one works and one doesn't what do I put on the list?

You put this: Works in some cases. You could even say that some work and that some don't. People can then choose to either A) buy a hard drive that has been said to work always, B) Try a hard drive that isn't on the list that could very well not work, or C) Try the hard drive on the list that is said to sometimes work. Either way, it will keep them away from the ones that are specifically listed not to work.

In the spirit of splitting inconsequential hairs unrelated to the actual discussion (the lifeblood of this forum). I'd just like to point out that Taiwan *is* china. Just, umm, a different china kinda like how north and south korea are both still korea.
Umm, no Taiwan isn't China, and North and South Korea aren't both Korea in any meaningful way. The Chinese government doesn't recognized Taiwanese sovereignty, but they have their own independent government, military, tax system etc., and do get their own weapons from the US, that's hardly indicative of being a part of China. North and South Korea are still technically at war as they've never signed anything to formally end the Korean war that's been technically ongoing since the 50s. Like Taiwan, both have their own independent systems of governance, weapons, taxes etc.

I'm not sure on what basis you'd suggest that they're one in both cases.[/end threadjack]

He's not suggesting that they're one country, just that they're both "China".

I would love to see a video of this :p
Though I take no responsibility if something BAD happens
I have no video camera, so I won't be able to shoot a video of this. (Nor would I want to! I'm not plugging that thing in again.)

maybe the drive that started this thread was an early model, and they revised it later to use less power, needs looking into more imo.
It's quite recent - it was bought two days before I tested it with the Pandora. :p

^ It's not good practise to have info scattered all over the forums, imo. OPT checks the "I need help" section regularly and that section is basically an archive for problems. Threads in General talk are buried quickly and posting problems somewhere in other threads makes it even worse ;)

OK, it just seems a bit odd because my post references the thread's content quite closely. Anyway contributors to the new thread seem to have gotten the jist ok :)

Feel free to post a link to this one over there for context, if you want. :p (Although it seems that you've gotten a reply from ED, now, so it's probably not necessary.)

I've got a 320GB WD My Passport Essential drive and I'm hoping to use that when I get my Pandora. I've been trying in vain to find out how much power it draws...

What's the point of a spec sheet that doesn't show the power the unit draws LOL.

I have the WD2500ME (WD My passport Essential drive 250gb) - Works perfectly!

Okay got my second unit (couple of minor issues on the first model) .... This morning tried it with my 250gb (with battery at 100%) and my lcd turned off - as soon as I pulled the usb cable out LCD turned on again.

So
1) Is it possible my first pandora could supply more power to the drive ????
2) I am now doubting myself ... did i have the power supply plugged in the first time ... I really am 99.99% confident I did not, but why is this unit not able to power the HDD

I truely am confused ???
