Discussion about SPM / Repo (Split from other topic)

Streak,

Could you port the SPM to *gulp* Windows?

.

Im not say "no", but this would be my last task, since i dont use gates xp :)

Sorry for late answer..

That really would be the best way - then I can grab your apps from my laptop (as I do with Milkshake's repo) and then put them manually onto the Pandora. I know you've made some ports in the past (DOSBox/MAME etc) that didn't really run very well, but I figured that you'd likely do quite well with Worker and would like to give it a try. A windows version of SPM would be most excellent, as it's the only way I can get your PND files.

Seems that by not using the repo, even people who want to use your software and ports cannot do so.

Edit: With the repo, anyone can browse the repository using a web browser, on whatever OS they like. With SPM they can only browse your files on their Pandora, and only if they install your software - which many will probably be quite nervous about doing, based on past events.

You ask me to argue, with You because You have different way to see things than I? Why should i argue? or explain things? It is as it is. Its freedom of choice. Im doing this , you're doing that.. That is the freedom.
But your execution of freedom is to take away the freedom of others (aka the choice of method to get your apps). I find that to be very ironic.

but hey as I said, I realized that is the way you want to go and maybe you will open up in the future (multi-platform support is a start), otherwise I will just not bother.

I, as well as others, thought I would let you know that you are limiting your audience here - which would be my primary concern, but is not yours, so my criticism is not reaching anything, so as I said: disregard me and go your way...

I haven't tried SPM myself (no time right now :) ), but the screenshots look promising.

Also, I think it's perfectly fine if you want to handle your own repo and files, that's part of an open community: Everybody can do what he wants, no one is forced to use an official or standard based repo.

Though I'd also be very happy if SPM or your repo or both would support the JSON standard - as in that case you could use SPM with EVERY external repo (right now, only yours and the normal repo) and you could use your repo with every JSON-compatible package manager (like Panorama or PNDStore), which would be awesome.

I could very well see SPM replace PNDStore in future OS Releases as well, if it would support JSON :)

It's up to you, but I think it would rock :)

did you not set this page up yourself?

what/who is this comment for and what is it meant to mean?

keep on going . Already saw serv comment, fool?

Well, possibly that he already have figured the server the request came from. One of the points of being in total control of the server that stuff downloads from, is that you can block undesirables from downloading.

this is true however the direct download links can easily be viewed i.e.

Code:
http://66.7.217.167/~openpand/opx/cli_love_experimental.pnd
so unless he changes the url that the app uses or his SPM does some sort of handshake with the server the download cant be blocked unless he blocks everyone.

Apparently two things are infinite. Space and human foolishness

There will be no action - movie here. Pure Peace, Love and Sunshine.. :) .

Well, of course he can block everyone. That is the point of forcing everyone to go through a closed app - You can control who gets in. Possibly also that you can send interesting data back from the units (username and such) to get a more fine-grained control, but I don't think so - I think the main points is to limit access to the pnds to an environment where you can avoid persistent comments and ratings. So far, we've seen that StreaK clamps down when people start to get critical or start pointing out problems with the ports and stuff. Both when leaving the repo and when disappearing from the FB wall. If people have to go through an app without a rating system or comments, then there will be no visible critique at the pnd source. If they are scrapeable through port 80, someone can do a mashup thingie.

Streak your methods of distribution of your apps make you appear like a control freak. Of course your free to do so and others shouldn't get to worked up over it.

Just as Im free to make the decision not jump though extra hoops to obtain your software. I think it a disappointment you decided to go against the most popular solutions. I think it was most proving when you had that temporary hissy fit and took down your facebook page rendering all your software void.

I think im most disappointed in your comments about the repo and reasons for not using it (or trying to improve it). Be aware the repo came about because the appstore was a pain to use and restricts the user. The repo was created for the same reasons you have decided to go against it. Did you really talk to Milkshake, or is this really a sad excuse for you to create a app for you to have control over?

I think there has been a behavior pattern going on and i really wonder what is your motivation for working on software for the pandora? Do you care more about the personal gratification from other users more than personally using and developing the app for yourself.

So I really dont expect your going to change anything, but my comments above really just are reflecting on what your real motivations are. In the same hand I dont ever expect to use facebook or another special app that could disappear at any moment to obtain or update software.

Openness and sharing is essential for Open Source projects. Everyone has the freedom to stay closed, but we are talking about GPLed software here, don't we? Why couldn't we use the freedom of the GPL? Request the source of the released pnds, repnd them and upp them into the repo?

This way the freedom of choice would be available for all.

@Streak, please read EDs post again. It's worth to think about it.
