Still fresh, damnit!
Many of you by now will be aware of the ditryc0w exploit, if you follow linux news at all. It's an exploit that allows an unpriveledged program to modify a file it doesn't have access to.
So, I built the exploit testing code on my Pandora and ran it. It took a while, but it did modify the file which I'd chmodded to make read only (https://raw.githubusercontent.com/dirtycow/dirtycow.github.io/master/dirtyc0w.c). Big-time erk!
So, there's unlikely to be a problem on the Pandora just yet, it's not remomotely exploitable, and nobody would have tried this technique before it was published, *and* we can mostly trust new software from users with a reputation, but it does mean that if someone we don't know now produces a new PND it might contain this exploit, and modify system software unbeknown to us.
Anyone else fancy testing this? When I tried it, it missed off the last character of my changed contents, but that may be because I used quoted parameters. It takes a little while to run - I forgot about it but it finished atfer 2 hours, and it took 20 minutes or so on my laptop (but I'd already patched that to be protected).
Do we need a patch for this? Can we expect one?
