So where can I get one cheap other than Ebay? They are going for 85 quid at Gamestation and I could afford one in two weeks but ideally I'd like a bit off so I can get stuff to softmod the bitch up aswell.

Well, I don't know where to get it cheap (as I'm from germany), but: Awesome decission! I made the same one 2 months back, and with Softmod..............Awesome!

Hope You'll find one soon enough, else go for the 85 quid thingy. It's not THAT much.

you softmod that slut, and you won't regret it!
you may get one cheaper online, but who knows. 85 pounds doesn't seem too bad for a new xbox.

£85 is good. you won't regret it once its done. playing n64 classics like Zelda and Sin and Punishment is great.

oh, easy as hell. You just need Splinter Cell, 007 AUF, or some third game (which i don't remember. You also need a way to get the hacked savegame on your box, the best way to do so, is to get a buddy with a modded xbox, trnasfer the savegame to his box via FTP and then to copy it over to a Memory Unit. You can then copy the save to your HD and run any of the above mentioned games, there should be an option "install Softmod" and "Install EvoX" or "install UnleashX" (go for Unleash!), which you should execute, and voila..... modded. There's another way to get the savegame on your Xbox, which involves a SMC-Reader, a SMC and a proper modded cable (a cable to hook up USB devices to your box). If you got the proper tools already lying around, softmodding costs nothing. If you don't, Softmodding can become VERY expensive.

well, but you have to pay attention to that game. There are version of that game that are "soft-moddable" and versions that are not

I have a crossover cable (somewhere), erm I will probably go for mech assault.

Can the controller be read on a mac with usb tomfoolery or do I need to hook a pc up/ get access to a pc?

so, you got a buddy with a modded box, and a Memory Unit?

EDIT: oh, wait missed the controller part:

I have no idea if a mac could "read" your controller, but i couldn't get it to work properly on my PC. I was able to use it as a controller on games/emus etc. but i wasn't able to acces the memory unit. So what i did, was hooking up my SMC reader with my xbox (via appropriate cable, selfmade from my buddy), so it would get fromated to FATX. I then hooked it up to my PC, hacked the Action-Replay-drivers so the AR software would recognize my SMC reader as and AR module, and transfered the save over.

€dit: You should better check out some FAQs on www.xbox-scene.com as you could probably gather more information there.

yeah, if you had access to an already (unsoft)modded xbox, then it would have been easier.
the only exploits/softmods i have experience with is the font exploit "bert and ernie"(i think). it only worked with an older xbox dashboard, too...been outta the loop for a while. check out the exploit section over at forums.xbox-scene.com(the best xbox modding resource). read over as much as you can before getting your box so everything'll make sense and be easy.

once you get your stuff running, check out emulators such as xsnes9x, neogenesis, kawax, surreal, finalburnx, etc......
and xbox media center for your media center ;)

later

if it's the newer 1.6 vers box, it'll be tough(er) to chip it. i find 1.2-1.5 the easiest to tsop flash, and 1.0-1.1 the best for chipping. but that's cuz i suck at soldering :D

I cant solder for shit, I can just about build PCs and that.

It should be an oldish xbox as its second hand and will be unboxed. - I'll have a look closer to buying the thing.
