Well, well, well it has finally arrived, and I'm pretty impressed to say the least. Here are my impressions, so enjoy............
I must say, this is damn nice, and about 30 years over due. LOL This is what I dreamed of as a kid, when Coleco offered their tabletop line-up of games back in the early 80's(which retailed for about what I paid for this). Everything is so detailed, even down to the mini tokens they include to add credits. Sadly, I don't see anyone setting any world records on this thing due to the size, but it is more than functional. I don't know that these fine details will be appreciated by the masses, but I think this hit the mark and then some. My son probably wouldn't see much difference between this, and the little myarcade cabs that are at Walmart for 15-20 bucks. If anyone grew up playing Centipede in the arcades, you'll feel right at home on this replicade.
Now, on to the price, at $160 I don't know if I can recommend this to anyone but the most diehard of collectors, but mine was around $90 through KS($115 shipped), so I'm not complaining. I think $100 should really be the top of the line on price, as this is half of what those new mini full size "short" cabs cost at $300. And while those I believe have 4 games, it is a full type arcade experience(although smaller). This is a novelty at best, but damn it's so F'ing cool, I really can't get over how amazing this is. I'm really looking forward to Tempest now, although I do own a full size coin-op for that one(which is in storage in my garage at the moment). My biggest issue with any forms of Tempest, are the vector graphics, and without the proper monitor, most options fall way short(that's why I own a machine). So after seeing Centipede, I'm more hopeful on future projects, but they are for sure going to have to pick the right games, as not everything is going to be good in this form.
I would love to see Frogger, as that would be a very playable game, on top of being very functional at this size. I really don't see that Street Fighter 2 being playable or even enjoyable(New Wave Toys 3rd announced game), due to the size, but there are many games that would work great with this smaller footprint. Ms Pac-Man would be another really nice offering. Well, anyway, to close, I really do like this a lot and while I don't think I may have bought this at $160. I will say that if I had, I would not have been disappointed, as this thing is just what it should have been, with no corners cut(as promised). BTW, New Wave Toys is offering a 10% off launch week special on their site, which should have expired this past Sunday, but looks to have been extended to the 30th.
