I'm glad I didn't click on any of those posts when I was at work.

I did. Fortunately my female boss was facing the other direction at the moment talking to someone else. That could have been bad...
Not to be too harsh, but anybody who gets fired over that sort of thing deserves it. Unless I'm missing something, cruising this forum isn't exactly what the company you work for pays for the internet connection for.

I have to admit, it always seems odd to me that it's become accepted practice to goof off online at work.

I'm a US soldier working in IT. (I don't have a job to do, unless something breaks.) So, yes, I browse the internet quite a bit while I'm working. (I'm payed salary anyway. :p )

Not going to get fired, but I might have to explain why there was porn on my screen.

Ah, that does make quite a bit more sense, it hadn't occurred to me that you were in that situation. Of course that's different.

I'm more used to people working in the US using the computer to screw around while not doing work the work they're supposed to do. And doing so when they could do it at home. If I did that at work, I'd be fired explanation or no explanation. The computer is there solely for log entries and looking up the current security briefings. Pretty much anything beyond that is grounds for discipline whether or not it's innocuous.

I work as the database and records manager as well as "Resident IT Guru" at a land-title company. Vast majority of my job is "Push button, watch loader-bar until done.", and much like michaeljustman, I'm not really busy unless something breaks (usually with someone else's machine). I think that these kinds of jobs are more common in our computerized age than one might think. Some days I surf the web, others I mess around with programming games, other times I'm studying for my MCSE.

Not that there aren't slackers surfing instead of working out there, but there are a signifigant number of us surfing to prevent our brains from shutting off completely due to lack of use.

On my last job one of my co-workers got everyone in trouble because he was watching episodes of Heroes online while he worked. Almost everything we did from that point online was scrutinized... atleast 'til our supervisor wanted to watch funny videos on youtube himself, then he kind eased off.
