I hope someone can help with this...

I bought 2 pandoras, 1 for me and another for a friend. They both worked fine until 1 decided to not boot into either GUI.

I initially thought it was the brightness problem detailed in another thread but having tried everything suggested there the problem still exists.

As soon as the battery is inserted the pandora turns on and the logo shows up, then moves onto the loading screen saying powered by angstrom, release 1 - "zaxxon" etc. but the bar only loads halfway then goes to a blank screen. The power light is still on but anything I press doesn't do anything, including moving the power switch. I also found the thread suggesting re-flashing the firmware from an SD card by holding R and I'm able to access this menu but when I go to "boot from SD1:1" it eventually fails :(

The following code is the update.log file so I'm hoping someone that can make sense of it can help me out... Cheers!

Code:

Calculating checksum, this might take a few minutes..
INCORRECT

The checksum is incorrect. Something in your firmware has become corrupted. You'll need to reflash to factory default and try again. The instructions are... here... somewhere. I'll find them, just a second.

edit: wait, you say you did reflash. But the checksum is still incorrect.
That's not right. :( Try reflashing a second time, and if that doesn't work then it's possible the NAND itself is actually bad, it just took a few reboots before it died.

I had this exact same problem when leaving the Pandora on all day and the lid closed, I think it ran out of juice with the screen off. The Zaxxon loading bar went just before halfway then the screen sudenly shot to a black screen (Backlight was still lit). Removing and inserting the SD cards made the LEDS blink for a few seconds.

I flashed the firmware and it boots OK again now

Forfot to say, I did try FN and brightness up

Thanks for the quick replies!

I tried using another SD card and voila! I feel like a bit of an eejit... I/O error is pretty obvious even for a non-coder!

I had used the original SD for ages with no problems so didn't even think about that being the problem.

Cheers guys! :)

Try formatting it with the SD format tool (panasonic format tool), here then do some read/write tests.. it might bring it back to life..

Yep, that Panasonic SD Formatter works wonders :D

A Pandora with a broken SD Card can hang in boot-up, since it tries to mount it. No need to reflash, though, just remove the SD Card while booting ;)

Just had this myself, and it scared the crap out of me.

I have a new technique to add to the arsenal against this. So I realized that the reason that the brightness buttons weren't working was that I was at the login screen, not actually in xfce yet.

Here's what you do:

  1. Reset
  2. Wait until everything stops blinking
  3. If you have it set to default to your username, press Enter ONCE, if not, type your username and press Enter
  4. wait a seccond
  5. Type your password and hit Enter
  6. wait
  7. Fn + Brightness Up.....fingers crossed

Hope that helps some people not have to re-flash...
