Hi Folks,

I been playing around with a version of the old classic arcade game Berzerk. Beefed it up a bit, added music etc etc.

Here's what I have come up with for starters.

Berzerk 2005

It's nothing special, just thought I would share it with you all....

You may need a beefy PC to play it though as it has the odd effect ere and there.

I didn´t notice any bugs, but a highscore list should be implemented.
That´s about it so far. Maybe i can think of some other thing...

Highscore is already in the pipeline. I have only just finished adding Evil Otto (The bouncing ball of death) . I only started this on Friday night, so it's kind of early in it's development.

I'm not expecting this to be anything huge, just a darned good laff on the PC. I hoped to maintain the gameplay of the original arcade game (Which I still play a lot). So far the games difficulty level is pretty high, something I am going to sort out. The music I designed in Sonar, and I am going to add more too. I also have some ideas for later levels that have extra nasties in them, such as mines that explode when hit. But I want to minimise them as this would change the game into something the original was not.

My comments:

-I liked the old wall graphics better
-Highlighting the highscore entry of the last game would be neat (i tend not to care about it and then i wonder which of the entrys is my score
-still a bit too hard; can´t get over 1650 points...

-sweet remake!

It's a great game, I'd never heard of or played the original. I like the voices and stuff in your version, the way it says ready...go, is brilliant. I know you said you don't want to, but, a port would be nice, whether it's possible is beyond me, but, the game could probably win a competition or something.

Sorry to hear about your wall graphic dislike, I thought the old wall was a bit blocky.

You're right about the difficulty level, I will be doing something about that soon. I might even make bonus and boss levels too!

High score will highlight your current score, I just haven't gotten round to doing that yet.

Another thing, I'm going to be beefing up the robot graphics too. I feel they are presently too flat, I want to make them more 3d and hopefully a bit more menacing!

Glad you like it so far. I'm afraid there probably won't be a GP32 version. Not in the near future anyway. I have a lot on my plate at the moment and the Berzerk2005 game is just play time for me. Just something to mess around with when I'm not seriously codeing SQL, PHP, VB etc.....

Thanks for the comments guys :)

Oh by the way, I had a spare 15 mins during my lunch break today, and I have knocked up a quick website for the game:

Berzerk 2005 Website

It's very simple at the mo, but I might make it more interesting at a later date!

Another Update!

New Robot design, they now look more menacing and have different colours too. Having flat sprites for the robots was getting on my nerves.

The game is easier (possibly too easy). The first two levels they don't even shoot at you.

The Robots die when they collide on the menu screen, for a laugh of course.

If you got onto the high score table, then it's highlighted.

Here's the download folks:

Enjoy!

I think you are right, I loaded up an old version and I prefered the wall. I still think it was a bit flat though, so I have altered the present wall in the style of the old wall. Also I have given it a blue tint, it sort of gives it a neon glow type feel.

Thanks again for you comments :)

Whoops I have a bug, it errors if you allow it to go to the high scores screen imediately after loading. I forgot to initialise a variable when the game loads. If you play the game the variable gets initialised and it's fine from there on.

I will fix that when I get home from work tonight as I haven't got access to the source code from here.

Halflife 2 runs with 40 fps, 1280x960 and best gfx on my PC.
Berzerk2005 runs with 19fps (according to FRAPS) and it´s very choppy sometimes... I think you gotta do something to increase performance.
Besides of that it is very fun, i think the difficulty is now well-balanced...
The new gfx look better.
Good work! Thank you!

Thanks for the comments.

Can I ask what the spec of your system is? It runs peretty cool on a Celeron 2.0 and P4 1.4.

Although the game looks noddy, it has some particle effects which take up CPU time.

Sorry, ´twas my error, i had Drempels running in the Background. After i switched it off, i had exactly 30 fps (you locked the framerate, did you?) during the levels and about 50 during the level changes. Everything fluid :)

Yippeeee, thanks for letting me know, I was getting worried there :)

I'm going to write a proper instruction screen today, so expect another update soon!

wow... This IS fun... Nice work

As for playing the original on our GP....
What systems was this made for? I've not really come around emulating any Atari systems - except ST.
