Check that out.
ARToolkit is opensource, if it was ported/compiled for the pandora, all those awesome movies are just a step away, since the pandora is portable you could film anywahere, anytime!

Imagine the epicness in bringing out a magic circle thing, in town!
Or just have a cute maid in your livingroom, otaku style.

EDIT: combine this shit with some video glasses, and the pandora in your pocket, awesome reality!

This AR stuff is just so cool. Now, the Pandora has it's possibilities and disadvantages. It's mobile and has a good battery life but it got no built in camera and you are limited by screen size a bit, I also wonder about whether it is powerful enough. If you find a small webcam that is good enough and can be clipped on the Pandora screen or if you hold the camera in your other hand I'm sure you can have a lot of fun with it :)

Exactly what im thinking, i got the playstation eye, sure, not the smallest and a pretty long cord, but its 30 fps at 640x480, or 60 fps at 320x240.
good framerate and very little delay, at 60fps its not noticable, at 30 it is if you look very closesly.

This was filmed by me, frapped it of my screen, used the playstation eye camera:

You seem to have a resolution problem there, neat that you could pull it off that quickly though. That new PS3 Eye camera would do the trick I guess, doesn't it film in 1080p? With a high resolution it will be easier for the software to recognize the "symbols" when you move them around.

Augmented Reality rocks!

How much you want to bet that one of the highest grossing games within the next 5 years will be one where augmented reality lets you play the part of a camera man that works on porno film sets. The box set will include a specially printed duvet cover to allow for easy tracking from the camera and a box of tissues.

I really need to learn how to code :(

lol tripmonkey, i need to learn coding too!

i know the c/c++ langs, but seriously, i need to get myself some experience!

Now if microsoft didn't buy the company that made the Zcam and renamed it natal, and made it xbox only.

we could've had some more fun with real 3d cameras.

AR is nothing new, I remember reading a article about it almost 10 years ago. It just hasn't caught on, I can see that trend changing as we get more powerful cameras in smaller devices.

The technology is simple and cheap, take a 2d video stream, throw it on the background, grab reference points, translate the reference points into world space and render away.

Why this won't catch on for the Pandora? Nobody wants to carry a bulky camera connected to their Pandora around.

I wouldn't call a webcam bulky.

and i was thinking more for shooting small films and such.
would be my main usage.

or virtual pet/girl whatever

I wonder if Eye of Judgement for PS3 had anything to do with the recent popularity?

And yeah, since the Pandora doesn't have a built in camera AR won't be a big hit on it. Maybe we'll see it do well on smartphones.

On the subject of cameras I found the Playstation Eye demonstration video. This is what I've been waiting for ever since I saw the revealing of the PS3. This is also what I've been missing on the Wii.

Augmented reality with interaction in EyePet. This is really cool stuff :)

Yes, iv'e got the eyepet, some stuff doesn't work well (atleast on my floor, with my lighting)
like when you need to tap the floor.

other stuff works fine, like hitting a switch to blow bubbles and using the magic card.

new video with some AR apps in a bit.

I have never seen this before!

This looks AWESOME!
How is this done? What do I need?

What about software? I'm sure I can get a tiny webcam.. Simple and Cheap. Glue it to the Pandora if I get desperate!

I have a Ping))) too!!

I WANT IN! What ever needs to be done - Count me in!
