.jpeg, .bmp & .png still pictures for wallpapers are getting boring. Why not kick it up a noch and use animated .Gif's. The green falling text from the matrix would look sweet.

Because the .GIF format is not free.

The latest applicable patent has expired in 2004. Cf Wikipedia (yeah, I know it's not because it's written there that it's true :D).

.GIF's are patented, and the owners like to try and sue everyone who uses it unless they pay royalty fees.

gif is also limited to 256 colors.
if you really want an animated non-video format, mng (animated version of png) or svg would be better.

Animated desktops are about as useful as a chocolate teapot, but that said it should be pretty easy to get an animated desktop if it runs the x window system.

Besides, why use GIF when you can use Xvid? :)
Because constantly decoding an Xvid video file would leave a horrendous footprint in your system memory...

But yes, some sort of gif-like animated background would be fun, if just to spook on-lookers with a background that ever-so-slightly changes over a long period of time :)

I posted this before (Years ago), Other members posted similar ones too.

It`s a jpg image that gives the impression that it`s animated.

Could be an option.
