There was a time, when 3 tracks was enough. When the AY chip was top notch music synthesis.
There is a program called AY emulator - which emulates AY files - speccy chip tunes (having owned the spectrum as a kid this is just pure nostalgia to me). The source code is free: http://bulba.untergrund.net/progr_e.htm
I am not sure whether this is easily portable - I see some pascal/delphi code in there. If not - maybe there is an alternative? a GMU player plug-in/modification?

I've found an old link to some ay players: http://www.worldofspectrum.org/projectay/ayplayers.htm many of them are dead now, however, I see there is a port of AYlet for the GP2x, but one user on openhandhelds says the port struggles to play many AY files. Maybe a port/optimization?

Maybe this is completely useless, but what are your thoughts?

I have ported Oricutron to the Pandora/Angstrom/Touchbook/Beagleboard environment, and it contains a very decent AY simulator already. There is talk among the Oric crowd of breaking this out into a standalone AY simulator, but for now if you want to listen to AY tracks, you can also have a look at Oricutron ..
