Albion

Fantastic job M-HT :) Albion always was one one my favorite oldschool RPGs, now I can't wait to enjoy it on my :gp2x Keep up the good work! Any plans for a donation option for this project?

I've heard a lot about this game, so I guess now that its part of the GP2x library, I'll be trying it out. I did the same with Star Control2. Never played it until it hit the gp2x and then I jumped right in. I've heard Albion is a great rpg, so i'm excited to get home and give this one a whirl.

So good work M-HT! The community could use someone with your skills. :D You could make a lot of people happy for doing ports of other great games that people want to see on the GP2X.

*cough* WASTELAND *cough* ;)

Or FFE... or Solar Winds... or Skyroads... Keen 4/5/6. Probably they're all written differently though, so the technique wouldn't work.

Once more, thanks for Albion though... it's one of those games I just assumed we'd never see :).

Bluntman: No donation option planned. But if you insist on donating, I could probably arrange something :)

WASTELAND, Darklands, FFE, Solar Winds, Skyroads, Keen 4/5/6 - I never played these games, but aren't some of them playable using DOSBox ?
Or in the case of WASTELAND, the Commodore 64 version using C64 emulator?

wow, I remember looking up Albion when searching for RPGs to play on an abandonware site, I downloaded it but never played it - what an opportunity to try it!

There seems to be a bunch of new ports out lately not directly related to the F200 but coming along around the same time, I'm glad!

Keep up the good work, lord knows how you managed all this on your own but you deserved to be recognised for it - maybe they'll use some screenshots in any new adverts for the 2X!

I don't know about the others, but Solar Winds is the only one there I'm interested in and it's not listed on the DOSBox compatibility list on the GP2X wiki.

My impression was that DOSBox tends to have pretty brutal performance for 386/486 games unless you turn off the sound and run with a high overclock. While it's probably not something you'll want to do regularly since everyone has their favourite DOS game that they'd like to see playable on the GP2X, any other games you can give the Albion treatment to will probably be appreciated.

I never thought of using a C64 emu for Wasteland. I'm going to try that right after Albion.

As for DosBox, i've never actually had it run anything except for the two games that came with the releases (alone in the dark was one of them)

Getting a front end on dosbox would be a major play for the gp2x... i'm not sure why no one ever tried. There are several for windows, like DFend, which I use.

I think the touchscreen is by default a USB mouse, or it might return (x,y,pressure) coordinates. I'm not sure, but I have another question :)

How would music be done? The music in Albion is simply MIDI, but from what I've seen of this program it doesn't seem to use any Linux libs? Would you use TiMIDIty, or another midi driver? Timidity would give the highest amount of customisation, (and if you have a seperate cfg file can go anywhere - even the nand, I believe), but if you're not using Linux libs it seems a little difficult to implement, so the alternative would be an Adlib emulator, I guess, but what do I know? I ain't a programmer :B

Looking forward to seeing what comes next with this project :)

No idea yet :)
I'm keeping the music as one of the last things to do, so I didn't spend much time thinking about it.
The thought of using TiMIDIty crossed my mind, but I didn't check whether it's possible it to use or not.

Hi,

I finally managed to finish the first playable version of Albion for the GP2X.

Music/sound does not work (except for intro video).
Virtual keyboard is not implemented yet.

Original Albion version 1.38 is required for playing.

Read the readme-GP2X.txt file in the archive for instructions.

Albion alpha 1 on the gp2x archive

For those who don't know:
Albion is a computer role-playing game released by Blue Byte Software in 1995 for the PC.
Read more on this wikipedia page.

P.S.
I also uploaded a 1kb demo I created while practicing ARM assembly to the gp2x archive.
WaterPlasma2x

You... are... a... GENIUS. After a few minutes of messing around with DosBox and copying files I fired it up and it ran beautifully on my F100 FE with no overclocking. Thanks for this amazing port.

Hm, I have no idea why, but it doesn't seem to work from me. It always sends me back to the menu.

Can anyone post a directory structure to check what I'm doing wrong? Thanks.

hi there try making sure the SOURCE_PATH is correct as in the readme document..

QUOTE
3) in file SETUP.INI change the path (SOURCE_PATH) from CD to the copied directory on disk (using relative path)
- in file c:\games\albion\setup.ini find line which begins with SOURCE_PATH=
- replace it with line SOURCE_PATH=ALBIONCD\

hope this helps... :)
