Yep :-) understood .... but it will presumably come automatically installed with a desktop? That's what I was meaning really -- not having any desktop just a command line and then add on the bits and pieces manually to make a desktop.

Not thinking so much about in this thread about security as in trying to stop someone from pinching my pyra or software-based security. What I'm thinking of is how to protect the pyra from things like being dropped or bumped.
A very long time ago someone suggested (back when the pandora was...
Edit: Changed title from "pandora" to pyra. Why do I still want to type pandora? x.x ..... anyway....
Hello all!
Just a quick question here. Does anyone know how installing an OS (debian) onto the pyra will work? So for example would the pyra have its own version of the debian installer?
I...
Leaving aside what CPU any new upgrade could use I can think of something which would be useful (slightly OT btw). If an updated CPU board is created one thing which would be useful is (assuming we're allowed to take apart our pyras and it won't invalidate a warranty) some sort of document (eg a...
>What are you going to do when you first get your Pyra?
I have a few things I'd like to try out. But I think the first thing apon opening up the packaging will be to make sure the pyra isn't damaged in any way. Parcel/delivery compnies have a tendancy to throw around parcels - and I hope nobody...
Ok, I found this site. First thing if I can even get it to boot properly will be to try to flash a newer bios from that site. Annoyingly the "2017/06/28 BIOS for Ubuntu" link is dead. I wonder what the bios for ubuntu even was?
Update: First thing I tried is to go back to kernel 4.9/Debian...
Two devices spring to mind although I don't use them any more. Both are from around the beginning of the decade.
The first one is the ben nanonote a really tiny computer that even makes the pandora look large. At the time I had hoped to replace a PMP with this device but it never happened...
I'm thinking it is a kernel problem now (updated my prev. post). Also thinking that having to power off with the power button once it hangs puts it into some sort of "weird" state and that is what all the blank screens and hanging is all about. So I'm guessing I'll have to wait for a newer...
Unfortunatly I don't have the original distro on my machine or a copy any more. I'm guessing it might need some sort of command line kernel parameter to make it work properly but I don't know what!
Here's what I've tried, kernel command line parameter passed at boot time by grub
I did try...
Hope I'm not resurrecting a too old a thread here. But I have a GPD pocket here. I managed to (just about) get linux going on it but have no end of problems. I'm finding that if I shutdown the device it dosen't quite finish it'll almost shut down and then just hangs. I did try some different...
Hello all! No I don't mean trying to 'make a case' for the pyra or anything like that - but instead here's a thought. You see once the pyra arrives and since it should be relatively quick I'm hoping to use mine as a replacement for a couple of devices (one being an old mobile phone which in turn...
Intresting, though slightly worrying. Maybe the production units will be better? Just out of intrest a short time back I got one of those new rpi 3b+ devices and ran kde on it straight from the debian repos. Even this newer raspberry pi struggles with it! Hopefully the pyra will do better. If...
Well I must admit I don't mind what desktop environment the pyra should use by default just so long as it can be changed. And I aplogise if it is slightly off topic, but I did a while back try running different DEs on a raspberry pi 3 to see how well they would perform. So maybe that gives a...
Some intresting stuff here. And I hope this is the right place to ask. But in terms of speed how does the pyra feel? What I mean is well .... I understand trying to compare the speed of arm and x86 devices is like trying to compare apples and bananas but just in general. So does the pyra feel...
Hello all! Well I only got my "The64 Mini" well .... yesterday and I've only had a chance to quickly look over the unit today. But I can offer a few observations. Please note though that some of this is just my opinion -- and I might also have one or two things wrong. So far I'm going to give...
I would do but I did try another battery which has a charge but it didn't work. It seems to be completely lifeless, there's no lights coming on not even a charging LED.
Is the repair still open btw? Just recently found my pandora rebirth (1Ghz) as failed -- first of all the backlight failed and not too long afterwards it will not even power on, no LEDs nothing x.x . I tried the battery from an older (and still working) pandora and still nothing. Also tried the...
Just a quick question. Is the CPU/GPU in the GPD Pocket a bay trail or cherry trail device? And can you just install a normal distro on the device? (So no locked down or confusing bootloaders or propietary X drivers tying you to a specific kernel version).
From what I can gather are these...
